‘The Batman’ is one of the highest-rated DC Comics movies and, at the same time, one of the most unique. The film, directed by Matt Reeves, presents one of the character’s darkest incarnations, featuring a masterful Robert Pattinson who was able to weather all the criticism and skepticism that arose when it was announced he would play the vigilante. Now, in an interview with
, the British actor discussed the filming and revealed the cult comic book that helped him get into character.
Pattinson read a lot of comic books to get into the right mindset, but it wasn’t until he discovered Dennis O’Neil’s ‘Batman: Shaman’ that he found a vision of the character that touched his soul and offered something no other film version of Batman had done before. What’s it about? “‘Batman: Shaman’ focused on the metaphysical aspects of the bat symbolism in particular and on trying to abstract the idea. It’s about setting aside the logic of becoming Batman and saying, ‘No, I’m becoming this other thing.’ And it’s not just to scare the criminal; it’s for oneself,” Robert Pattinson explains in the interview.
A comic book that had never been cited as an inspiration for the movie
The work, written by Dennis O’Neil, features illustrations by Ed Hannigan and John Beatty. The comic tells the story of Batman in his early days as a hero and depicts an encounter he had before becoming one, when a shaman healed him and told him a sacred story about the origins of the bat.
‘Batman: Shaman’ gave Robert Pattinson a deeper understanding of what it means to embody the character: “It’s because you feel a deep connection to this creature you’ve created, which you then come to believe you’re becoming—or that it’s actually you—even though you built it yourself. You have to believe that it’s not a costume, but your own skin.”
