Japanese Dramas Coming to Netflix in 2027 & Beyond

Japanese releases might not match the sheer volume of K-dramas on Netflix, but 2027 still has a fantastic lineup in store. We’re getting brand-new series like From NEET to Peak and the next chapter of the Parasyte story starring Kutsuna Shioli, plus a sequel to the hit film City Hunter. On top of that, 2027 could also bring us highly anticipated second seasons for fan favorites like Last Samurai Standing, Tokyo Swindlers, Sanctuary, and Yu Yu Hakusho. Here’s your preview of Japanese dramas coming to Netflix.

From Neet to Peak (Season 1)

Netflix Release Date: January 2027

Wataru Ichinose takes on his second lead role for Netflix, after previously starring in the sumo sports drama Sanctuary. As for Suzu Hirose, she has already seen great success on Netflix after recently starring in the incredible television adaptation of Human Vapor, and previously starring in Asura.

After eight years as a shut-in, Kanta Kakuhata is forced to confront reality when his mother receives a terminal diagnosis. Regretful, he makes an absurd vow: he will marry Japan’s top idol, Mami Hamamiya, and his mother cannot die until he does. To achieve this impossible goal, Kanta must leave his house. Treating his quest like life missions, he slowly learns to socialize, befriends eccentric characters, and transforms his life into a grand adventure.

Parasyte: Tamiya (Season 1)

Parasyte is a beloved horror manga franchise that Netflix has already adapted with the Korean series Parasyte: The Grey. The latest chapter of the Parasyte story, from the creators of Parasyte: The Grey, will follow the POV of Ryoko Tamiya, played by actress Kutsuna Shioli.

Parasyte: TAMIYA is the next evolution in that universe. In the original manga, Ryoko Tamiya is a parasite who takes over the body of a high school teacher and becomes an antagonist for Shinichi Izumi. Initially a brutal parasite that attacks humans indiscriminately, Tamiya learns a great deal about humanity through her job as a teacher. Upon seeing Shinichi and Migi sharing a body, she begins to think that coexistence with humanity will give her species the best chance at survival.

City Hunter 2 (2027)

An excellent live-action adaptation of a beloved manga, City Hunter has been one of Netflix’s most popular Japanese movies ever, after bringing in 21.3 million views in 2024. With plenty of material left to adapt, fans will be excited for the second installment.

The story centers on Saeba Ryo, an elite “sweeper” based in Shinjuku who takes on dangerous jobs from the criminal underworld. While he’s notoriously hopeless around beautiful women and often loses composure in front of them, Ryo becomes a consummate professional once on the job, executing missions with extraordinary marksmanship, exceptional physical ability, and a calm, analytical mind. Ryohei Suzuki returns as the cool yet goofy and irresistibly charming Saeba Ryo, alongside Makimura Kaori, his partner and heroine, and the elegant yet sharp-tongued detective Nogami Saeko.

Last Samurai Standing (Season 2)

Netflix Release Date: 2027 (TBA)

Last Samurai Standing was a smash hit when it first dropped on Netflix, amassing 21 million views in 2025. The series has also remained popular into 2026, with the first half of the year drawing 5.2 million views. Fans were delighted to learn that the series will return for a second season, but it’s unclear exactly when it will land on Netflix. It’s our hope that Last Samurai Standing will return sometime in 2027. We may get a first look at a teaser for the series in early 2027 when the streamer drops its Japanese slate for the year.

Set in 1878 during the Meiji era, Last Samurai Standing follows 292 fallen warriors lured into a deadly survival game. Starting in Kyoto, they must battle for wooden tags and race to Tokyo for a massive cash prize. Shujiro Saga, a notorious former samurai burdened by his bloody past, enters this brutal battle royale to save his sick family, only to unwittingly uncover a larger political conspiracy.

Yu Yu Hakusho (Season 2)

It’s been almost three years since Yu Yu Hakusho first dropped on Netflix, making the recent reports of a second season a massive surprise for fans. The series is set to tackle the Demon World Unification Tournament arc, bringing in fresh cast members Shun Oguri, Nobuaki Kaneko, Mirai Moriyama, and Mizuki Yamamoto to play denizens of the demon world.

Sanctuary (Season 2)

Netflix Release Date: 2027 (TBA)

Filming for the second season of Sanctuary is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026, which means the series could land on Netflix sometime in 2027. No other information is known about the second installment, but we expect to learn more soon.

Tokyo Swindlers (Season 2)

Tokyo Swindlers Japanese Thriller Coming To Netflix In July 2024

Netflix Release Date: 2027 (TBA)

Given that it premiered to modest success over two years ago, the season two renewal of Tokyo Swindlers is a genuinely pleasant surprise. At the very least, fans are delighted to see the series return, which will shift the focus to the origins of land-swindler Yamanaka Harrison. It’s unclear if the series will return in 2027, but we’re hopeful.
