78-year-old Kat Bowie from Scotland has been playing the popular game Fortnite for nearly nine years. About 24,000 people follow her streams on Twitch, and now she has also made it into the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest female Fortnite streamer.
Kat Bowie plays Fortnite under the username “grumpygran1948.” Translated, this roughly means “grumpy grandma from 1948.” However, Kat herself insists that her nickname is just a joke. “Everyone knows I’m not grumpy at all,” she says.
She became famous thanks to her streams on Twitch. About 24,000 subscribers follow her gameplay. Viewers love her humor, her enthusiasm, and her infectious laugh. Now, a world record has been added to this list of achievements. Kat has been officially recognized as the world’s oldest female Fortnite streamer. She also received a certificate from the Guinness World Records.
How a Grandma Started Playing Fortnite
Kat’s journey into the world of video games began in 2017. That’s when she saw her grandson playing Fortnite. The game immediately piqued her interest. Soon after, Kat created her own account and started playing herself. Her grandson’s words particularly struck a chord with her. He couldn’t imagine that anyone would want to watch his grandmother play a video game.
As it turned out, he was wrong. Kat gradually began hosting her own livestreams. Over time, her viewership grew, and with it, the Scottish woman’s popularity. It was her grandson who suggested the username “grumpygran1948.” Kat kept it as a playful reminder of her age and personality, even though she doesn’t consider herself grumpy at all.
Kat has no plans to stop
Despite her age, Kat continues to play and stream regularly. “Almost nine years later, I’m still playing, and I still enjoy it,” the record-holder said. That said, winning the game isn’t always her top priority. Kat values the process itself, teamwork, and connecting with the people she’s met through Fortnite. For her, it’s not just a video game. Her streams have helped her build a large audience and a community of people who enjoy watching her play.
Kat also wants to show other older people that you don’t have to give up new hobbies just because of your age. “Never let your age hold you back. If I can do it, so can you,” she said. So instead of letting her age limit her, 78-year-old Kat continues to play Fortnite, interact with thousands of viewers, and now officially holds a world record.
