Dice will be rolling, cards will be dealt and costumes will be on display when KAMCON returns to Kamloops this weekend.
The annual tabletop gaming convention runs from Friday, September 25 to Sunday, September 27 at Thompson Rivers University’s Campus Activity Centre, bringing together board gamers, role-playing fans, card players, cosplayers and anyone curious about diving into the hobby.
Now in its ninth year, KAMCON has grown considerably since launching in 2018 with an event confined to TRU’s Grand Hall. This year’s convention again spreads across the Campus Activity Centre with games, special guests, panels, workshops, contests and a marketplace.
One of the things organizers emphasize is that visitors do not need years of gaming experience to take part. While there are competitive tournaments throughout the weekend, most of the gaming is designed to be accessible to newcomers. Game Masters, Dungeon Masters and experienced players will be available to help people learn the rules, join a table and try something new.
That means someone who has never played a tabletop role-playing game can sit down and learn, while experienced players can spend the weekend exploring new games or competing in familiar ones.
KAMCON covers a broad range of gaming interests, including traditional board games, tabletop role-playing games, trading card games and miniature wargaming. Cosplay, contests, panels and workshops add another layer for visitors who are just as interested in gaming culture as the games themselves.
This year, the convention is also adding pinball machines and live music to the mix. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets is scheduled to perform Friday night, giving attendees something a little different from the usual tabletop lineup.
For many attendees, the weekend is as much about meeting people as it is about winning a game.
KAMCON gives local gamers an opportunity to find new groups, meet people with similar interests and try games they may not otherwise have a chance to play. For newcomers, it offers an easy way to explore tabletop gaming without needing to buy a game or assemble a group first.
The cosplay side of the convention also brings plenty to see even for those who do not plan to spend the entire weekend sitting around a gaming table.
KAMCON takes place at the TRU Campus Activity Centre, 1055 University Dr., from September 25 to 27.
