Meta has announced the Meta VR Glasses, a new wearable that is set to cost $1,300, weighs about 100 grams, and will feature quite a few prominent game franchises, including Capcom’s Ace Attorney.
Officiallyintroduced yesterday, the company pitches the device as a pair of glasses you can comfortably wear for hours. There isn’t a strap and controllers aren’t needed, using capabilities like hand tracking and passthrough to navigate it. There is, however, a puck connected by an optical tether, which handles compute, battery, and storage. Meta expects users to “conveniently” clip to their pocket or bag.
One of the most prominent reveals isPhoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR, which adapts the fifth mainline entry in the loud lawyer series and further neglects people’s desire for a seventh entry. Thetrailershowcases the player making use of hand-tracking gestures to present evidence and point at witnesses to raise objections, with the latter using voice-activation for you to actually shout the word.
There’s alsoTetris Effect: Mixed Realities, which is a hand-controlled and room-aware mixed reality version ofTetris Effect, andBeat Saber: Flux, which adds hand-tacking to the rhythm game. All three games are slated to launch in 2027, but they aren’t exclusive to the Meta VR Glasses and will be available on the Quest as well.
Meta’s decision to place video games front-and-center of its new VR headset may surprise some readers, as the actual situation in and around Meta doesn’tpaint a pretty picture. The company’s Reality Labs division, which houses its video game business, haslost around $83.6 billion in six yearsafter being tasked with wrestling the metaverse into being. During that time, Meta hasshuttered a number of its internal VR studios—includingAsgard’s Wrathdeveloper Sanzaru Games,Deadpool VRmaker Twisted Pixel Games, andResident Evil 4 VRdeveloper Armature Studio.
Despite the ongoing climate around VR, companies continue to push for new headsets. A few weeks ago, Valve shared details of theSteam Frame, which is a wireless headset with controllers that falls more in line with the Meta Quest 3. At the same time, the device will cost $1,059 for the basic 256GB model, with the 1TB model rounding up to $1,200 instead. And that’s without purchasing any additional accessories, like a standalone power cable.
