Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again will end with its upcoming third season on Disney+, which will premiere in March 2027. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter while season 3 is heavily in post-production, roughly two months after filming wrapped, and also coincides with Marvel parting ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane.
While this might sound like another cancelation, there’s an important distinction here. Marvelhad only publicly committed to three seasons of Born Again, so this is technically the show not moving forward with a fourth season. But still, the decision is pretty surprising considering Marvel Studios had previously talked about potentially making Daredevil: Born Again one of its long-running, annual Disney+ shows.
Daredevil has had one complicated journey back to the MCU
Netflix’s original Daredevil premiered in 2015 and ran for three seasons before the streamer canceled it in November 2018. The cancelation came alongside the eventual demise of the other Marvel Netflix shows, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders.
Charlie Cox eventually returned as Daredevil for a small but worthwhile cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin followed in 2022’s Hawkeye for more than a cameo, and Marvel eventually announced Daredevil: Born Again for Disney+.
The revival didn’t have a smooth production, though. Matt Corman and Chris Ord were originally hired to lead the show, but after roughly six episodes had been filmed, the studio (and both Cox and D’Onofrio) felt the series wasn’t quite working, which led to a major creative overhaul. Dario Scardapane (Punisher) became showrunner, while Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Moon Knight, Loki) joined in as directors.
That overhaul (mostly) paid off creatively. Season 1 received an 87% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while season 2 currently sits at 86%. Both fans and critics generally view the second season as an improvement over the first, although the revival hasn’t quite matched the highs of the Netflix original (yet).
The second season also brought Krysten Ritter back as Jessica Jones and Mike Colter as Luke Cage, while Finn Jones is returning as Iron Fist for season 3. Elodie Yung is also returning as Elektra, making the upcoming final season pretty much a Defendersreunion.
That makes the decision to end the series surprising. Brad Winderbaum, who is Marvel Television’s head, previously said in 2024 that Born Again could easily be a multi-season show and that Marvel wanted its television shows to run for multiple seasons and release on an annual cadence. He specifically described the goal as creating shows people could rely on as recurring events, as opposed to previous one-off shows like Hawkeye, Ms Marvel, She-Hulk,and Moon Knight,to name a few.
The plans have obviously changed since then, thanks in large part to to the diminishing returns of some of these shows. Marvel has increasingly reduced its live-action Disney+ output going forward, and the acclaimed Wonder Man was canceled in July despite initially being renewed for season 2 just months earlier.
That doesn’t prove the same reasoning applies to Daredevil, but it does show that Marvel’s television strategy is changing, as season 2 of Born Again saw about a 50% decline in viewership compared to season 1.
Hopefully, that doesn’t mean Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is disappearing from the MCU. He appeared in No Way Home, and while he does not appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel Studios has plenty of opportunities to use the character elsewhere. Avengers: Secret Wars is a possibility, and so is the fifth MCU Spider-Man movie, which is currently in development, with Destin Daniel Cretton expected to return as the director.
The third and final season of Daredevil: Born Againwill premiere in 2027.
