Rajesh Tailang will return in Bakaiti 2
Veteran actor Rajesh Tailang, who is known for starring in Mirzapur, Delhi Crime, Bandish Bandits and more, is all set to star in the highly anticipated Bakaiti Season 2. He will reunite with Sheeba Chaddha in the series.
In an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol, Rajesh Tailang teased the upcoming season and what the audience can expect. He also shared his experience of working with Sheeba Chaddha, Tanya Sharma and Aaditya Shukla.
He also told Moneycontrol that the OTT platforms have offered great opportunities to a lot of actors to evolve. He also shared how the entertainment industry has changed over the years.
While talking about what the viewers can expect from Bakaiti Season 2, the veteran actor shared that the upcoming season is as ‘relatable to the audience as the first season was.’
He added, ‘Its unique appeal lies in the fact that it’s a slice-of-life story—it feels just like your own home and family. So, while those elements are certainly there, there are new things this time around as well. There are new storylines and fresh aspects to see. But rest assured, you will get an even better version of what you experienced in the first season.’
Rajesh Tailang also shared his experience of working with his co-stars, and how their equations have evolved from season 1 to 2.
He shared that he has been working with Sheeba for a long time, so the rapport was already there. In season 2, he revealed that his interactions have been primarily with the two children, Tanya and Aditya, and he has formed a really strong bond with them.
He then teased, “Hamare bahut hi emotional scenes bhi hain na is baar, toh definitely pehle se ek family wala feel hai (We have some very emotional scenes this time around, so there is definitely a sense of family right from the start).”
He elaborated, “Kai baar kya hota hai na ki series hum karte hain, toh uska second season aane mein waqt lagta hai. Aur yeh humne second season within a year shoot kiya dobara. Toh har cheez, matlab, everything was fresh (Usually, when we do a series, it takes a while for the second season to arrive. But here, we shot the second season within a year, so everything—I mean, absolutely everything—felt fresh).”
Rajesh Tailang then talked about working with Sheeba Chaddha in almost three shows – Bakaiti, Mirzapur, and Bandish Bandit.
He shared, “Definitely, when you know your co-artist as a person also and as an actor also, toh it helps, but it is challenging at the same time. Kyunki every time you have to bring out a new kind of dynamic to their relationship. Kyunki ab husband-wife agar woh teen alag-alag series mein hain toh har baar woh similar toh nahi hai na. They share a different kind of relationship. Woh subtleties ko bhi baar-baar pakadna, woh challenging bhi ho jata hai (Because every time, you have to bring out a new kind of dynamic in their relationship. After all, if the husband and wife appear in three different series, the dynamic isn’t going to be the same each time. They share a different kind of relationship. Capturing those nuances repeatedly can be challenging).”
“Kyunki kai baar koi kahin se bhi doosri jagah ka spill nahi hona chahiye idhar. Lekin teeno husband-wife bilkul different tarah ke hain aur different tarah ki relationship share karte hain (You have to ensure that elements from one scenario don’t spill over into another; yet, the husband-wife pairings in all three are completely different and share distinct types of relationships),” he added.
The veteran actor reflected on the challenges of middle-class family stories often find humour in very ordinary situations, and how difficult it was to make everyday conversations feel entertaining without overplaying them.
He said: “That is the challenge, and that is one of the challenges of this series. It’s the situations are not out of this world; it’s daily routine, mundane, pedestrian situations. As an actor, it’s much more challenging for you to do, to bring out the realism and fun behind it.”
He added, “Otherwise, there are no dialogues as such; there are no dramatic situations. All things are conversational and day-to-day life situations. Usmein beech-beech mein kuch aisi situations aati hain, but yes, woh ek challenge bhi hai aur woh fun hai (We have faced some such situations in between, but yes, that is also a challenge and that is fun).”
“Aur definitely, woh mujhe lagta hai jo main hamesha bolta hoon ki, ki we should take life with a pinch of salt. Toh yeh series mein woh bada achhe se hai (And definitely, what I feel is what I have always said, that we should take life with a pinch of salt. So this series is very good),” continued the actor.
The actor has also talked about what has changed as an actor from the time you entered to now.
He shared, “Bahut saari cheezein change hui hain. Definitely, mujhe yeh lagta hai ki pehle se mujhe better roles offer ho rahe hain. Jo starting mein I started with good roles, then in-between, mujhe achhe roles nahi mil rahe the. But abhi phir se, I’m getting good roles, toh definitely mere liye achha hai, and I’m exploring. Aur khas taur pe jab, when I started, there was no OTT, there were only films or TV serials. Toh aapke paas ek limitation thi. Films mein, bahut hi kam milta tha kaam, ya milta tha toh not great roles.”
(A lot of things have changed. I definitely feel that I am being offered better roles now compared to before. While I started out with good roles, there was a period in between where I wasn’t getting quality work. But now, I’m getting good roles again—which is definitely great for me—and I’m exploring new avenues. Especially when I first started, OTT didn’t exist; there were only films or TV serials. So, there were limitations. Work in films was scarce, or if you did get a role, it often wasn’t a great one).
He added, “Aur television mein jo kaam hota hai, woh aapko length wise bada ho sakta hai, lekin usmein explore karne ko aur depth itni zyada nahi hoti thi. But I think OTT is a sweet spot jismein you get to play characters with certain depth and length also (Television work might offer a longer duration, but it didn’t always provide much scope for exploration or depth. OTT, however, hits the sweet spot—it allows you to play characters that possess both depth and a substantial narrative arc).”
“So, OTT is a blessing for me, for a lot of people, for a lot of actors also. And not only actors, technicians, directors, writers- for everybody.”
Without giving away spoilers, what is one reason you think viewers who enjoyed Season 1 should return for Season 2?
Rajesh: Mujhe lagta hai ki jo bilkul jo relatability hai, jo slice of life jo hamari yeh hai, Bhakaiti, woh hai. Ismein emotion hai, drama hai, comedy hai, aur yeh ek dramedy hai. Ismein is baar zyada dramedy hai. Mere khayal se is baar jitna hasana hai, utna rulana bhi hai, aur bahut kuch nayi cheeze bhi milengi (I feel that the key element is the sheer relatability—that ‘slice-of-life’ quality and the banter (bhakaiti) that defines it. It has emotion, drama, and comedy; it’s a dramedy. This time around, the dramedy element is even stronger. I think this season will make you laugh just as much as it makes you cry, and there will be plenty of new things to experience as well).”
Bakaiti Season 2 is set in old Ghaziabad and follows the Kataria family grappling with a financial crunch. When Naina is forced to share her room with her younger brother Bharat, sibling tensions rise.
Bakaiti Season 2 is set to release on September 25, 2026, on ZEE5.
