Kane Chronicles: Rick Riordan’s Disney+ Series in the Works

Rick Riordan is heading back into the myth business, and this time he is trading Olympus for the banks of the Nile. In early September 2026, Deadline reported that a live-action Kane Chronicles series is in development at Disney+, with Riordan co-creating alongside Angela Robinson, whose credits run through How to Get Away with Murder, True Blood, and The L Word. The project comes from 20th Television, the same studio behind the streamer’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians. One important caveat: this is a project in development, not a greenlit series, so there is no cast, episode count, or premiere date yet.

    A Second Mythology Enters Riordan’s Disney+ Orbit

For readers who only know Riordan through demigods and Greek gods, The Kane Chronicles is a different animal. The trilogy, made up of The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow, follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, descendants of the pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great, as they inherit a very dangerous family talent for Egyptian magic. That swap of pantheons matters. Where Percy Jackson trades on the familiar shorthand of Zeus and Poseidon, the Kane books ask a young audience to sit with Thoth, Set, and the logic of ancient Egyptian magic and the Book of the Dead. The premise, gods loose in the present tense and a pair of estranged kids caught in the middle, has the same appetite for the sacred crashing into the mundane that made old deities walking around the modern world such fertile television ground elsewhere.

From a Netflix Turnaround to Disney’s Slate

This is not the first time someone tried to put Carter and Sadie on screen, and that history is the most interesting part of the announcement. Variety reported in February 2024 that Netflix had scrapped its planned Kane Chronicles film trilogy, leaving the project in “turnaround” after two years spent chasing a script, starting with a Red Pyramid adaptation from Star Trek: Prodigy writer Diandra Pendleton-Thompson. That collapse is why the Disney+ news lands as more than a routine development notice. A beloved property clawing its way back after a false start is a familiar arc, the same one that let a beloved fantasy series get a second screen life after a failed adaptation, and the move from a feature trilogy to an ongoing series is the smarter shape for a story this dense.

Angela Robinson and the Adaptation Question

The name I keep circling back to is Angela Robinson. Handing a mythology-heavy young-adult saga to a filmmaker with her range signals that Disney wants character friction, not just spectacle, and the Kane siblings live and die on that sibling tension. The real test is fidelity, because Riordan’s fandom is famously protective of the page, and the art of adaptation is exactly where these projects either earn trust or lose it. Riordan has reason to feel confident. Variety reported that Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 3 will premiere November 20, 2026, adapting The Titan’s Curse, proof that his hands-on approach at Disney+ has legs.

    Final Thoughts

I am cautiously thrilled. The Kane books are the most underrated corner of Riordan’s shelf, funnier and stranger than the Percy Jackson core, and Egyptian mythology is a genuinely fresh well for a genre that keeps returning to the same three or four Greek gods. My worry is the word “development,” which has burned Kane fans once already. If Disney treats this as a real priority rather than a placeholder to keep the rights warm, Carter and Sadie could be the best thing to happen to Riordan’s screen universe since Camp Half-Blood. For now, I am hoping the god of chaos does not get the last word again.
