Apple TV’s thriller series starring Jessica Chastain as an investigator who infiltrates online hate groups to prevent potential acts of political violence is finally readying for an official premiere.
Created by Canadian playwright Melissa James Gibson, who also serves as showrunner, The Savantwas prepped for release on Sept. 26, 2025. But Apple TV shelved the series days before it was meant to bow in the wake of the killing of controversial conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Now, The Savantis set for a spring premiere in 2027, per Deadline Hollywood.
Apple TV declined to specify the reason for The Savant’s postponement at the time, simply relaying to Entertainment Weeklyorward to releasing the series at a future date.”
EW has reached out to a representative from the streamer regarding the resumed release plan.
Chastain herself commented on the sudden move the following day, cautiously noting on social media, “I want to say how much I value my partnership with Apple. They’ve been incredible collaborators and I deeply respect their team,” before sharing, “That said, I wanted to reach out and let you know that we’re not aligned on the decision to pause the release of The Savant.”
Chastain then elaborated on her feeling that, rather then pull back on the release of a politically timely show amidst political upheaval, the streamer should lean in.
“In the last five years since we’ve been making the show, we’ve seen an unfortunate amount of violence in the United States: the kidnapping attempt on Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer; the January 6th attack on the Capitol; the assassination attempts on President Trump; the political assassinations of Democratic representatives in Minnesota; the attack on Speaker Pelosi’s husband; the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk; the recent shooting at an ABC affiliate station in California; and over 300 school shootings across this country,” she said.
To Chastain, the above incidents “illustrate a broader mindset that crosses the political spectrum and must be confronted. I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is. The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honoring their courage feels more urgent than ever.”
She stated that she remained “hopeful” Apple TV would un-press pause, and this past April, she got her wish. She shared on a red carpet at the time, “Before it was like, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to see it,’ but now I can say, ‘We’re going to see it.'”

Gibson was inspired by Andrea Stanley’s 2019 Cosmopolitanarticle “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” when creating the series. The article profiled an anonymous investigator known by her inner circle simply as “The Savant,” who has dedicated years to going undercover in online spaces dedicated to extremist hate.
The series stars Chastain, NFL pro-turned-actor Nnamdi Asomugha, and Orange is the New Blackstar Pablo Schreiber in the core cast. The supporting cast of recurring characters is stacked with famous names, including James Badge Dale, Michael Mosley, Dagmara Domińczyk, and Jordana Spiro.
