What’s a “Crew Girl” to do? The new Canadian rowing drama, which has spent two weeks on Netflix’s Top 10 list, leaves viewers on a number of cliffhangers — but let’s be real, nothing is more pressing than the show’s central love triangle.
Here’s what we’re looking at: When a family scandal blows up her life in Los Angeles, teen rowing phenom Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau) relocates to Massachusetts’ Easton Prep, where she becomes the coxswain for the varsity boys’ crew team. During the course of the first season, Teagan finds herself romantically entangled with two particular rowers — entitled trust fund baby Josh Regis (Samuel Braun) and brooding mechanic Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark). They’re two sides of the same YA coin, so of course Teagan finds herself hopelessly drawn to both.
As the season unfolds, the guys play emotional ping-pong with Teagan, constantly giving her reasons to question how she should feel about them. Cam snags the final kiss of the season, but not before an extremely vibey scene between Teagan and Josh. Perhaps that’s why Martineau is refusing to play favorites, telling Tudum that she’s siding with neither Team Cam nor Team Josh.
“I’m Team Teagan — girl power!” Tao says. “We all have those moments where we feel like the underdog or underestimated, especially as women in male-dominated environments. So I’m Team Teagan, because she’s a pretty powerful young lady.”
Unfortunately, unlike so many other teen dramas streaming these days, “Crew Girl” isn’t adapted from a book series, so we can’t flip ahead to spoil Teagan’s big decision. For now, we’ll just have to rely on what the actors have to say about the show’s brewing love triangle.
Samuel Braun improvised a key moment between Teagan and Josh in the Crew Girl finale
Before Teagan’s kiss with Cam at the end of the finale, she shares another bonding moment with Josh, whom she previously kissed for the first time in Episode 5. Even though Josh begins the season as the walking cliché of a silver spoon-fed rich kid, he presents a much softer exterior by the end, specifically where Teagan is concerned.
“Teagan might be more attracted to this vulnerable side of Josh,” actor Samuel Braun tells Tudum. She is, after all, the first person in whom he confides about his crew-ending heart condition.
Josh and Teagan’s final scene ends with a longing glance as he exits the boathouse, a meaningful moment that Braun apparently improvised on the spot.
“Originally, the look wasn’t written in,” Braun says. “It leaves the audience going, ‘There’s something still there to be explored.'”
Kyle Clark predicts ‘tension’ between Teagan and Cam in Crew Girl Season 2
As for Kyle Clark, he’s pretty confident in Teagan and Cam’s relationship right now, but there are plenty of variables to consider should “Crew Girl” be renewed for Season 2. For one thing, he doesn’t know the full extent of Teagan’s connection with Josh, a revelation that will help Cam fill in some troubling blanks.
And then there’s the crew of it all. Cam has taken over stroke seat, and “there might be some tension with how he’s handling that emotionally,” Clark tells Tudum.
