Renowned artist, illustrator and author Sabyasachi Hazra shared his reflections on art, memory, creativity and the purpose of an artistic life during a special conversation titled “Contemplation: An Unhurried Journey Through Art, Purpose, and Life”, organised by Gallery Cosmos at Cosmos Centre in Dhaka on September 19.
The session brought together artists, art enthusiasts and cultural practitioners for a conversation exploring Hazra’s creative journey and the experiences that have shaped his artistic practice.
Moderated by Gallery Cosmos Artistic Director Sourav Chowdhury, the programme was attended by Gallery Cosmos Founder Enayetullah Khan, among other guests.
Hazra began by revisiting memories of his childhood and early life. Born in Khulna and raised in Itna village of Lohagara, Narail, the artist spoke about the people, landscapes and experiences that shaped his imagination and gradually influenced his creative work.
Rather than viewing art as a destination, Hazra described it as an ongoing journey shaped by observation, memory, curiosity and lived experiences. His reflections moved between childhood recollections and his later encounters with art, literature and the wider world, offering insights into the personal experiences behind his creative expression.
The discussion also explored his distinctive approach to illustration and visual storytelling, his relationship with books and printed images, and the importance of contemplation in an increasingly fast-paced creative environment.
Throughout the session, Hazra emphasised the value of slowing down, observing closely and allowing ideas to develop over time. He reflected on how creativity can emerge not only from constant activity but also from silence, observation and sustained engagement with life.
The artist also discussed the relationship between personal experiences and artistic expression, noting how memories can remain embedded in creative work even when they are not consciously reproduced.
The conversation offered the audience an opportunity to explore the thoughts, memories and questions that have accompanied Hazra throughout his artistic journey.
The evening concluded with an interactive session, during which audience members engaged with Hazra on his experiences, artistic philosophy and perspectives on creativity and life.
The programme was part of Gallery Cosmos’ efforts to encourage dialogue and exchange between artists, cultural practitioners and art enthusiasts through discussions on art and creative practice.
