How Adam West made the ‘most comic book accurate’ Batman version

The late Adam West created the “most comic book accurate” version of The Batman back in the ’60s.

Born on September 19, 1928, West reached a milestone at 88, passing away on June 9, 2017. He played the DC Comicssuperhero in the classic 1960s TV series. After being pigeonholed by Hollywood, West reinvigorated his career by doing voice work on Family Guy and Batman: The Animated Series. After playing the same character for three seasons and a movie, the late actor returned to the role that made him a star in his last work, the animated film Batman Vs. Two-Face.

Despite the character evolving over the years, West played the most faithful iteration of The Batman. This came after Christian Bale warned fans that they had “never met me” in a resurfaced red carpet confession.

When The Batman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, the protector of Gotham City debuted in 1939. In the original crime stories, Bruce Wayne, disguised as the dark vigilante, was a grim persona who killed criminals and battled vicious supernatural creatures of the night.

However, there was a change in editorial direction at DC Comics during World War II. While making the switch to juvenile fantasy, Batman became more family-friendly.

The Batman comics were visibly light-hearted and colorful. The Penguin wore a bright blue tuxedo, and Batman became more of a parental figure toward his sidekicks, Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, and Dick Grayson, also known as Robin (who grew up to become Nightwing).

The ’60s TV show never strayed from the pop-art look of the comics of the time. West’s costume was based on the gray-and-blue suit with a yellow utility belt, as illustrated in the comics. West played the Caped Crusader with a straight face, referring to Robin as his “old chum,” meaning a close friend.

In November 2014, the actor acknowledged that he played the character sincerely because the comics portrayed him as a confident teacher and parent. The TV show was geared for children, much like the family-friendly comics, with humor added for the adult viewers.

“It was a constant effort to walk a tight wire, to be seemingly serious and very dynamic for the children,” West told Den of Geek, “but to give the adults the laughs without winking at the camera.

“And the villains were great; the guest stars, they were almost Shakespearean. Look at the costumes, the delivery, the personalities they created.

“Quite frankly, I’m one of the luckiest actors in the world. I was able to create a character who became iconic,” he finished.

Fans took to a Reddit thread to praise the star for his comic-book portrayal of the Caped Crusader.

One fan said, “West has been the heart of Batman comics and movies and cartoons and video games ever since. Whatever is happening, Batman takes it seriously.”

Another fan added, “West’s fantastic. Perfectly captures the Silver Age spirit of Batman.”

A third wrote, “Any essential take on Batman needs a little Adam West in there. West wasn’t goofy. He was serious, and that’s what made him funny. That’s the essence of Batman. He never wavers. Batman sticks to the case and prioritizes it until it’s done.”
