An acclaimed PlayStation 5 strategy game sequel finally comes out of early access today. The game is now available in the PlayStation Store for players ot purchase and enjoy.
Endless Legend 2, after spending the past year marinating in player feedback, has finally released its 1.0 version. With the sequel coming out over a decade after the original, Amplitude Studios CEO Romain de Waubert de Genlis reflected on how much player expectations have changed.
Speaking with Rock Paper Shotgun on the matter, he said, “Now if you come to early access with an unfinished game you’ll get crushed…’I paid you 50 euros and you give me an unfinished game?’ The expectations are not the same at all.”
What sets Endless Legend 2 apart from other 4X strategy games
Endless Legend 2 brings a lot to the table that its predecessors did not. It spent a year fixing bugs in its game to finally come out with a 4X strategy game with some genuinely fresh features that lend themselves well to the genre. While it does import a few tricks from its predecessors, Endless Legend 2 marries the idea of its retreating oceans to the very core of what drives the 4X strategy genre.
The receding seas are able to add new land to the map, seamlessly avoiding any sort of stagnation while incentivizing exploration and expansion. Not only does this reveal new land, but it also connects previously isolated parts of the map.
This also keeps the gameplay dynamic, given that players might have to find new ways to defend secure borders with each Tidefall. However, what it also does is reveal new dungeons and re have built, and possibly clash with rivals in a renewed expansion effort
Endless Legend 2 greatly improves on its predecessors. While it might have had a slightly rocky Early Access run, at launch, the game remains peerless in its genre.
