Sweet Magnoliashas been canceled by Netflix after five seasons.
Developed by Sheryl J. Anderson and based on the novels of the same name by Sherryl Woods, the series starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley as three friends born and raised in a small southern town “where everybody knows everybody and everybody knows everybody’s business,” according to an official description.
However, the news is bittersweet for fans of the romantic drama, as Deadlinereports that the streamer has ordered a new drama from Anderson and Swisher titled Ladies of the House.
The new series is loosely based on Lauren Edmondson’s 2021 novel that puts a modern spin on Jane Austen’s classic Sense and Sensibility.
The logline reads, “When the charismatic owner of a winery dies unexpectedly, his wife and two adult daughters must battle through their issues with each other in order to confront challenges with the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives. Good friends and good wine will aid in the journey to hang on to the winery, but what matters most is that they find a way to hang on to each other.”
Despite the positive news, fans of Sweet Magnolias expressed their disappointment on social media, noting that several plotlines will remain unresolved.
“It just needed one more season to really wrap up the storylines!!! Just one more,” one fan begged on X.
“Netflix cancelling Sweet Magnolias after 5 seasons like we didn’t just spend years getting attached to these people,” wrote another
“Netflix sees a loyal audience and cancels it. the algorithm sees a man watching one documentary about sharks and builds him a shrine. make it make sense,” complained a third.
“RIP to one of Netflix’s strongest weapons against moms getting anything productive done at night,” a fourth joked.
Sweet Magnoliasdebuted in 2020 during the first wave of Covid lockdowns, which helped it become an unlikely comfort-watch hit for Netflix.
The show’s writers marked the end of the era on Instagram with a statement shared on the show’s Instagram page.
“All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours goes. Sweet Magnoliasis now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix,” they wrote before thanking the cast, crew, producers, Netflix and fans.
In a separate statement, Anderson said she was “thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with JoAnna and Netflix.
“When Jo shared the novel with me, I immediately saw the foundation for a series centered on three women grappling with the complexities of family, friendship, and romance — the kind of stories Jo and I most enjoy telling. I cannot wait to share the Richardson women and their world with Netflix’s global audience.”
Swisher added: “From the moment I read Lauren Edmondson’sLadies of the House,I fell completely in love with Daisy, Cricket and Wallis: their relationships, their messiness, their strength, and most of all, their heart.
“I am beyond excited to continue to tell meaningful, female-driven stories alongside the incredible Sheryl J. Anderson, and to bring this to life through our production company Rolling Clover and with our wonderful partners at Black Label. Netflix has been my creative home for the past seven years, and I couldn’t imagine a better place, or a better team, to tell this story.”
Sweet Magnoliasjoins a slew of canceled Netflix shows this year, including neo-Western Ransom Canyon, sci-fi series The Boroughs, Western drama The Abandons, The Vince Staples Show, and Japan’s Alice in Borderland.
