Kyler Murray had mixed results with the Arizona Cardinals before a foot injury ended his 2025 season, and the team released him the following offseason. He was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings during the 2026 NFL offseason and given another shot at starting. He was injured in his first regular-season game with his new team, and LeSean McCoy has already seen enough.
LeSean McCoy Calls Out Kyler Murray After Disappointing Regular-Season Vikings Debut
Murray threw just five passes against the Green Bay Packers before exiting Week 1 early with a concussion, but one of them was an interception. McCoy explained why he wasn’t surprised by the turnover and urged the Vikings to go in a different direction at quarterback, even when he is healthy again.
“Go play Fortnite or whatever other games you play. Go play your games and let the real quarterbacks play, because I always said, I didn’t think he would finish the season as the starter anyway,” stated McCoy.
He added, “They’re not paying him big money, he’s on a trial type of deal. If you be honest, and you look at him in his whole career, he has really great flashes and has tons of bad moments. He is not a starting quarterback in the NFL, and that’s the truth.”
Murray signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with Minnesota. Because his $36.8 million guarantee from Arizona contains offset language, the Cardinals are responsible for the remaining roughly $35.5 million. McCoy believes this may give Minnesota more flexibility with its quarterbacks, as it isn’t locked into a major financial commitment.

He urged the franchise to move on from him in favor of Carson Wentz, who led the team to a victory over their division rivals after Murray exited with his head injury. It appears Wentz will get the Week 2 start against the Chicago Bears as the concussion protocols are unlikely to be cleared before then.
Wentz profiles as much more of a backup than a realistic future solution at the position, but McCoy apparently views him as a better option than Murray at this point in their careers.
The former Cardinal once finished among the top 10 overall quarterbacks in PFN’s NFL QB Impact Rankings, but that was all the way back in the 2021 season.
For what it’s worth, Wentz hasn’t finished among the top 10 quarterbacks for even longer, having done so twice in his career, in 2017 and 2018, during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is also on just a one-year contract in Minnesota for 2026, so the Vikings can reassess their quarterback situation in the coming offseason.
