Microsoft has been in the limelight pretty much non-stop ever since Asha Sharma took over Phil Spencer’s role. Numerous changes have since taken place both internally and for consumers. While some of these changes have been more business-focused, others are more consumer-friendly, like the disc-to-digital program. Turns out, this was 15-years in the making, with the original intention being much more wholesome.
According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, there were some plans for the Xbox One ahead of its 2013 launch that never came to fruition. One of those was to inculcate a more consumer-friendly digital future where gamers could recycle digital games, gift them to others, and even visit retail stores to convert physical game discs to digital. This was back in 2011, and it demanded the Xbox One be always online. That came with some backlash, and it made Microsoft walk back on its plans.
15 years in the making
However, in preparation for the Xbox One launch, Microsoft made the decision to embed a unique serial number on the discs, which now, after 15 years, is what allows current-gen Xbox consoles to convert physical Xbox One and later discs to digital. While Microsoft has not revealed any further plans for its disc-to-digital program, the original vision behind it was surprisingly very pro-consumer. Now, whether the company will bring those ideas back or not, remains to be seen.
Unlike Sony, Microsoft has not specifically announced a digital-only plan for the future. But it is likely that the company will follow suit given the financial savings, as large or small as they may be, and the drop in manufacturers authorized to produce physical discs. It is unclear if Project Helix will come with a disc drive or not, just like the PS6. Chances are that neither of the consoles will accept physical media.
A clear path to victory?
It seems like Microsoft has a way to win back its fanbase if it can direct the digitization program to be what it was originally intended. But it’s not going to be an easy task. Warren also points out that licensing comes with its own challenges since publishers need to agree to it. While a lot of games are already part of the program, and big publishers like Ubisoft have also hopped on board, there could still be some that refuse. Allowing games to be converted into digital licenses is just one part of it. To fully embrace the original idea, Microsoft will have to convince publishers to agree on a cohesive operating procedure for buying digital games, transferring licenses, reselling, and digital gifting.
