Ryan Murphy‘s true-crime show, Monster, is all set to return to Netflix today. This will be the fourth season of the crime anthology series, which will follow Lizzie Borden.
According to an update from Tudum, fans will be able to stream Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story starting September 17, 2026. The series will consist of eight episodes, centering around Borden, who was the prime suspect in the killing of her father and stepmother back in 1892.
Interestingly, this will be the first time Murphy focuses on a female perpetrator. Previously, his Monster series has portrayed the stories involving Jeffrey Dahmer, Erik and Lyle Menendez, and Ed Gein. Ella Beatty will play the titular lead, Lizzie Borden. Joining her will be Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, and Rebecca Hall.
Speaking with Netflix, Beatty shared her excitement about the eight-episode series. She said, “I am so excited for viewers to experience our exploration of Lizzie Borden’s story and the questions that her life animates to this day. This season gives us our first female ‘Monster’ and delves into female rage and repression, which I’ve found to feel strikingly relevant. I cannot wait to share it with the world.”
How Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story reimagines the infamous 1892 murders
The plot of the latest season of the anthology series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan revolves around the 1892 axe murders of Lizzie Borden’s parents. The recently released trailer shows how Lizzie’s parents were killed and traces back to what unfolded in the past before their death.
The synopsis of Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story reads, per PageSix, “When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge.”
The official synopsis from Netflix further continues, “The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world — they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.”
Many decades have passed since the case reached its conclusion. Although Lizzie Borden was found not guilty of killing her parents, people have continued to argue about whether she was truly responsible for their murders.
Reflecting on how Ella Beatty prepared to portray the character, she stated, per Tudum, “Immediately when the audition came up, I listened to every true crime podcast that I could find to learn the facts of the case.”
