To reclaim your own life, you let a stranger into the room where your baby sleeps. The new Turkish series builds its unease out of that ordinary trade — no ghost, no masked figure, only the quiet transaction that keeps millions of two-income households running.
Not a Stranger — Seni Tanıyorum in the original Turkish — is a psychological thriller about Funda, a painter who wants to return to her career after having a baby and hires a nanny, Nazlı, to make it possible. On paper it is a solution. Nazlı is competent, warm, and quickly indispensable, and that is exactly the trap the series sets. Streaming on Netflix, Not a Stranger treats capability as camouflage: the more the family needs her, the further inside their lives she reaches.
The arrangement at the center
Director Mert Baykal and writer-creator Tuğba Doğan are working a subgenre with a long memory — the outsider who arrives as a fix and stays as a problem. What the premise establishes, and what the date-announcement trailer foregrounds, is a slow migration of authority inside one household. The woman who believed she ran her home discovers that the person she pays has become the axis the child, and then the marriage, quietly turn around.
The mechanism is domestic rather than lurid. A nanny occupies a peculiar position in a family: intimate enough to raise your child, distant enough that you never truly know her. She learns your routines, your weaknesses, the hours a marriage runs thin. Not a Stranger locates its threat in that access, not in a weapon. The most a baby monitor can report is where someone is standing. It cannot tell you who they are when you leave the room.
The intruder-thriller endures for a reason. From The Hand That Rocks the Cradle to Apple‘s Servant, the genre keeps returning to the same figure — the helper hired in good faith who reorganizes a home around herself — because the dependency it exploits is real. Every version updates the fear for its moment. Not a Stranger updates it for a Turkish middle class that runs on domestic labor and for a streaming audience that recognizes the arrangement instantly, wherever it lives.
That anxiety is deliberately ordinary, which is why it lands. Two-career families depend on paid care, and the arrangement is so normal that its strangeness has gone invisible. By making the caregiver the source of dread, the series does what the strongest domestic thrillers do — it takes a structure the audience already lives inside and raises the lights until that structure looks frightening. The horror is not that something alien enters the house. It is that the house was always this exposed.
The story also sits on a fault line most families prefer not to examine: the imbalance between the people who employ care and the people who provide it. A nanny sees the private version of a household — its money, its arguments, its unguarded hours — while remaining, to her employers, largely a blank. That asymmetry of knowledge is the real engine of the genre, and Not a Stranger appears to build its tension directly on top of it.
A star recast
Casting is where the argument sharpens. Elçin Sangu built her fame largely in romance, cast as the object of affection; here she plays Funda as a woman losing command of her own home, which inverts the register audiences expect from her. Melis Sezen, as Nazlı, is asked to be the calm center everyone else drifts toward — the more reassuring she is, the more unsettling the drift becomes. Ozan Dolunay plays İlker, Funda’s husband, positioned precisely where a domestic thriller needs its second adult: close enough to comfort, close enough to be turned.
Sangu’s casting is itself a piece of strategy. A lead the audience associates with warmth, arriving in a thriller, primes viewers to trust her the way Funda trusts Nazlı — and to feel the floor shift when that trust is put under pressure. The supporting bench — Cemal Hünal, Efe Taşdelen, Murat Garipağaoğlu, Mine Teber, Nergis Öztürk — is stacked with familiar dizi faces, the kind of ensemble Turkish viewers read instantly. That recognition is part of the design: when a cast this legible is assembled around a premise this intimate, the show is betting audiences will extend trust to people they think they already know.
Netflix’s Istanbul engine
There is an industry story running underneath the domestic one. Over the past several years Netflix has turned Turkey into one of its most reliable-led mysteries, exporting Istanbul-made suspense to subscribers who will never set foot in the city. Not a Stranger extends that strategy rather than departing from it
Turkey’s television industry was a major exporter long before Netflix arrived — its dizis have filled prime-time slots from the Balkans to Latin America for more than a decade. What the platform added was reach and format discipline, packaging that tradition into contained, globally legible thrillers. Not a Stranger is a clean example of the result: local craft, local stars, an international delivery system.
The move is specific: take a face the domestic audience associates with love stories and drop her into a house where love is the vulnerability, not the payoff. Bombon Studios produces, with Pelin Diştaş and Kerem Çatay — names attached to some of the country’s most exportable series — as producers. This is not an experiment at the platform’s margins. It is Netflix doing, in Turkish, exactly what it has learned travels: a contained, star-led thriller with a premise that needs no translation.
The economics of streaming increasingly reward that shape — a self-contained story, a recognizable lead, a hook a viewer in São Paulo or Seoul grasps from a single sentence. A stranger raising your child is that sentence. The series is engineered to clear the language barrier on premise alone, and its release slots into a 2026 Turkish lineup that Netflix continues to treat as a core pillar rather than a regional sideline.
What viewers are searching for
For anyone finding the show through search, the basics are straightforward. The original title is Seni Tanıyorum; it streams worldwide on Netflix; and it is an original psychological thriller created and written by Tuğba Doğan rather than an adaptation of a known book or format. What the premise cannot resolve

Exposure is not the same as safety, and a thriller this domestic draws its charge from that gap.
That is the friction Not a Stranger is built to sustain — the recognition that trust, once handed to a stranger, cannot be verified after the fact. Whether the series pays off the unease its premise promises is what the premiere will settle. What is already clear is the target it has chosen: not a monster, but the ordinary decision every working parent makes and then tries not to think about.
