Lena Dunhamis taking a break from being the voice of a generation for a new role: that of mom.
The Girlsalum shared that she and her husband of five years Luis Felberwelcomed a baby girl with the help of a surrogate, detailing the experience in an op-ed for Vogue.
“13 days late, in the face of a solar eclipse and a meteor shower, she announced herself,” Dunham wrote of her daughter’s birth. “I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all.”
“I saw her face, gasping just as she did,” she added. “Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly.”
For Dunham—who has been open about undergoing a hysterectomy in 2017 amid her endometriosis journey—the moment is one she will never forget.
“’Hello,’ I said,” the 40-year-old recalled. “‘I’m your mama. You look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.’”
Speaking to her daughter for the first time, Dunham wrote, left her “bashful and dizzy with joy.”
Though Dunham kept her and Felber’s surrogacy journey private, the Too Muchactress previously shared their plans to expand their family alongside her own relationship to her fertility.
“It was a grief but it was also a relief,” Dunham told The Timesin July 2025 of her hysterectomy. “I thought I would have the opportunity to experience my fertility and my cycle waning and it never was.”
“Instead it was a very quick, sharp cut-off…I will say we’re in the process of expanding our family in new ways,” she added. “I want to safely meet our children and then figure out how to talk about it.”
Thankfully, she’s had the perfect partner at her side for every step of the journey.
“I am so lucky in that the last years have been, I would argue, the most peaceful of my life,” she told Peoplein June 2025 at the time. “Sometimes I feel like I am boring on the phone with my friends, because I have a lovely husband who I adore.”
