Sekiro: No Defeat Anime Announcement
The anime for the award-winning video game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, from legendary game developer From Software,was announced at Gamescom on August 20, 2025, debuting a short trailer showing a retelling of the events in the game. The trailer showcases an amazing art style as well as the anime-style looks of some familiar characters, such as Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Wiki and Kuro, The Divine Heir.
Sekiro: No Defeat Anime Everything We Know So Far
Sekiro No Defeat will be produced by Qzil.la Co., Ltd., with KADOKAWA Co., Ltd. and Arch Co., Ltd. The show will be directed by Kenichi Kutsuna, the script will be written by Takuya Sato, known for their writing for the Asagao and Kase anime, and the character design will be handled by Takahiro Kishida, who worked on Haikyuu. In a recent press release, Director Kutsuna stated: “In adapting the overwhelmingly beautiful Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice into an anime, I have poured every ounce of my ‘beauty’ into creating this work. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the game or experiencing the world of ‘Sekiro’ for the first time through this anime, we’re confident this work will leave you with something to take home.”
This project marks a highly significant milestone as it is the first time a FromSoftware IP has been developed into another on-screen medium. In an exclusive interview, Director Kutsuna explained that the screenplay and storyboarding process was done “very closely” with FromSoftware to ensure everything remained in line with the established world setting. Transitioning the experience from a player’s first-person POV to a linear, audio-visual medium allowed the team to add deeper nuances. Series composer Shuta Hasunuma noted that music plays a vital role in this new format, helping to correctly capture the era’s feel and guide the audience through both intense action sequences and private, dramatic moments.
Fans of the game will be thrilled to know that the majority of its original Japanese cast will reprise their roles for this series. In the latest updates following Trailer 2, confirmed returning cast members include Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf (Sekiro), Miyuki Satou as Kuro (The Divine Heir), and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina. Furthermore, five more original voice cast members have been confirmed: Jin Urayama as Busshi (The Sculptor), Shizuka Ito as Emma, Akimitsu Takase as Hanbei the Undying, Takaya Hashi as Fukuro (Owl), and Tetsuo Kaneo as Isshin Ashina. It was also revealed that the theme song for the anime will be “Blu” by the late legendary composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto.
In the trailers for the Sekiro No Defeat anime, we are shown moments highly familiar to players. One scene shows Sekiro fighting with Genichiro Ashina in a clearing just after the secret passage Sekiro and Kuro exited. Just like in the game, Sekiro loses to Genichiro in their initial encounter, losing his arm in the process. Other major bosses are also highlighted: Gyoubu Oniwa, who is still voiced by Kosuke Takaguchi, is seen mounted on his horse, rearing. One of the 4 Folding Screen Monkeys located in the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo is spotted about to be jumped on by Sekiro, and Lady Butterfly makes a brief but impactful appearance. Later scenes show Emma kneeling at the Dilapidated Temple. With the anime slated for a 2026 theatrical release in Japan before heading to Crunchyroll, fans eagerly await to see how the rest of Ashina’s brutal world translates to 2D animation.
In the second trailer, we saw the return of even more familiar characters—such as the enigmatic Sculptor, the iconic boss Corrupted Monk, a brief glimpse of a battle with the Great Shinobi Owl, a flashback to Sekiro’s childhood, and Isshin Ashina. We also saw the return of more classic locations from the game, including Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo, and Fountainhead Palace. Regarding the overarching narrative, Director Kutsuna recently confirmed that out of the game’s major branching paths, the anime has “leaned towards one of those storylines.” At this point, it is still unknown exactly which specific ending this chosen path will ultimately adopt, so we will just have to wait and see.
