Warning: This article might contain minor spoilers for Marvel’s Wolverine.

He ain’t no hero. He’s Wolverine. To be the best there is at what he does, Wolverine must also look the part, and so the creative team behind <a href="https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/marvels-wolverine/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Marvel’s Wolverine turned to the comics for inspiration.

With more than 50 years of Logan to explore, Marvel’s Wolverine draws references across all eras of the character’s bloody history, from his earliest adventures to his brutal present. Here are just a few comics that inspired the game!

    WOLVERINE (2003) #42

WOLVERINE (2003) #42 cover by Humberto Ramos referenced in 'Marvel's Wolverine'

HEAR HIM ROAR!To give the character a proper introduction, Marvel’s Wolverine turned to the WOLVERINE (2003) #42 cover by Humberto Ramos, which finds Logan in a fighting mood: claws out, crouched, and unleashing a furious roar.

    MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS (1988) #81

MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS (1988) #81 by Barry Windsor-Smith referenced in 'Marvel's Wolverine'

GIVES IT TO YA!When Logan escaped the Weapon X facility in Barry Windsor-Smith’s segment of MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS (1988) #81, he left a trail of bodies in his wake. Likewise, Marvel’s Wolverine allows players to get just as vicious through the gameplay’s combat mode.

    X-MEN (1963) #509

X-MEN (1963) #509 by Matt Fraction and Greg Land referenced in 'Marvel's Wolverine'

GETTING TO THE POINT! Logan shares a turbulent, violent history with Lady Deathstrike that comes to a point in the final moments of Matt Fraction and Greg Land’s X-MEN (1963) #509. The relationship between them doesn’t improve much in Marvel’s Wolverine, where an encounter ends with similar results.

    WOLVERINE (1988) #10

WOLVERINE (1988) #10 cover by Bill Sienkiewicz referenced in 'Marvel's Wolverine'

‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ | WOLVERINE (1988) #10 cover by Bill Sienkiewicz

FRIENDLY FIRE!One of Logan’s first comic book encounters with Sabretooth, as depicted in Bill Sienkiewicz’s cover to WOLVERINE (1988) #10, may be his last in Marvel’s Wolverine. In a Marvel’s Wolverine boss battle, Sabretooth strikes a similar pose while tussling with his frenemy Logan.

    WOLVERINE (1982) #2

WOLVERINE (1982) #2 by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller referenced in 'Marvel's Wolverine'

NINJA ATTACK! During a trip to Japan in WOLVERINE (1982) #2, Logan finds himself in a scrap with a ninja clan that reaches a shattering conclusion. Marvel’s Wolverine borrows a page from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller for a similar showdown.

    X-MEN (1963) #142

X-MEN (1963) #142 cover by John Byrne referenced in 'Marvel's Wolverine'

    ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ | X-MEN (1963) #142 cover by John Byrne

GOTTA HAND IT TO YOU!The John Byrne cover for X-MEN (1963) #142 gave Marvel’s Wolverine the perfect fodder for Logan’s Sentinel encounters. In both, Logan finds himself caught in the palm blast from a Sentinel, which ends in flame and fury for The Best There Is.

    X-MEN (2004) #178

    'Marvel's Wolverine' | X-MEN (2004) #178 cover by Salvador Larroca

    ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ | X-MEN (2004) #178 cover by Salvador Larroca

IT AIN’T BRAIN SURGERY! In Marvel’s Wolverine, Logan gets plenty of opportunity to prove he’s the Best There Is against his Sentinel combatants. Fortunately, the comics provide plenty of references for that, including Salvador Larroca’s iconic cover to X-MEN (2004) #178.
