Entertainment heavyweight and part-time Provincetown resident Ryan Murphy is behind Netflix’s upcoming retelling of the Lizzie Borden story, streaming Sept. 17.
The latest installment is the fourth in Netflix’s “Monster” series, created by Murphy and Ian Brennan. Past seasons have focused on Jeffrey Dahmer, Erik and Lyle Menendez and Ed Gein.
Murphy married his husband David Miller in Provincetown on July 4, 2012, according to the Provincetown town clerk’s office, and has a house on Commercial Street, according to assessor records. He’s won multiple awards and received critical acclaim for blockbuster shows like “Glee,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Pose,” “American Horror Story” and more. In June, Murphy was awarded “Filmmaker on the Edge” at the Provincetown Film Festival.
Some of Season 10 of “American Horror Story,” “Pilgrim,” was filmed in Provincetown in 2021. Murphy was also an executive producer on “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette”, which aired in the late winter of 2026, with part of the story told — but not filmed — on Cape Cod.
What do we know about “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story”?
The show will begin streaming Sept. 17.
The cast includes Ella Beatty, who will play Borden, Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall, Jessica Barden, Joey Pollari, Billie Lourd and Sarah Paulson, according to the Netflix description of the show.
The show focuses on the events leading to the infamous ax murders of Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother, Andrew and Abby Borden, in 1892. Though Lizzie Borden was acquitted, and many have poured over the details of the case without coming to a definitive conclusion, the show’s description seems to have none of the ambiguity of the real-life events that inspired it.
“The only question is what weapon will do the job,” an article on Netflix’s promotional material website Tudum reads. “A knife? Too easy. A rifle? Too kind. Lizzie settles on an axe.”
