The blue blur is speeding back to Netflix! Following a highly successful run with Sonic Prime, Netflix and SEGA have officially announced a brand-new multi-project collaboration, and a brand-new Sonic animated series is officially in development.

The news comes as part of a massive new partnership between the streaming giant and the legendary video game publisher, which will also see adaptations of Crazy Taxi and RGG Studio’s STRANGER THAN HEAVEN hitting our screens in the coming years (separate stories to come!)

But first, let’s talk about our favorite hedgehog. Here’s everything we know so far about the newly announced Sonic series.

What is the new Sonic series about?

Netflix is no stranger to the Sonic universe. The streamer previously dabbled in the franchise with the hit 3D animated series Sonic Prime, which ran for three action-packed seasons and is currently available to stream globally, with the final season dropping back in January 2024. While Prime explored a multiverse-shattering adventure for older kids, this new project is taking a slightly different approach.

According to the official press releasepre-school audience.” But don’t let the younger demographic fool you—SEGA and Netflix are promising that the show will retain the franchise’s signature edge

The series is described as “a high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfillment.”

Toru Nakahara, Head Producer at SEGA, teased the tone of the upcoming show, saying fans should: “Expect something cute yet cool for Sonic… because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started. The whole team is absolutely thrilled!”

Who is behind the new Sonic series?

The new series is currently in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara.

Nakahara is a veteran of the Sonic franchise, having served as a visionary producer on Paramount’s blockbuster live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films, as well as the recent Knuckles spin-off and Netflix’s own Sonic Prime. His heavy involvement is a great sign that the franchise’s beloved DNA will remain fully intact for this new iteration.

Part of a Growing Video Game Slate on Netflix

This new Sonic series is just one piece of the puzzle in Netflix’s ever-expanding push into video game adaptations. Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix, celebrated the new SEGA partnership, stating:

“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up. With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, we get to work across three completely different eras of SEGA’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences.”

In addition to the SEGA titles, Netflix’s upcoming slate of video game adaptations is absolutely stacked. We’re currently looking forward to a live-action Assassin’s Creed series in 2027, a live-action Gears of War film (if it ever gets beyond the script), animated adaptations of Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans, an Overcooked competition series, and returning favorites like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Season 2), Splinter Cell: Deathwatch (Season 2), and the third and final season of Devil May Cry.
