Buckle up for another fast-paced round of government intrigue in Netflix’s hit political thriller!
The Diplomat is a witty drama that follows U.S. Ambassador Kate Wheeler (Kelly Russell) as she attempts to defuse a tense international situation in London while dealing with a relationship with an ambitious career politician. The story of an unstable marriage.
The couple’s different (and often opposing) approaches to diplomacy led to both friction and success in their work with the British political team.
Additionally, Kate is being secretly fast-tracked behind the scenes to become the next Vice President of the United States.
Has The Diplomat been renewed?
Yes! Season 2 of The Diplomat proved to be such a hit on Netflix that it was renewed a week after the first season aired.
How did The Diplomat season 1 end?
Season 1 ended with a car bomb in London that may or may not have injured Hal Wheeler (Rufus Sewell).
While Kate is in Paris with British Foreign Secretary Dennison (David Gyasi), both realize that Prime Minister Trowbridge is the only person to benefit from Roman Lenkov’s death.
Also: Eidra—and her amazing Get a haircut! ——She broke up with Stewart when she learned that Stewart would follow Kate back to the United States if Kate became Vice President.
The Diplomat season 2 plot (and spoilers!)
The biggest question to be answered in Season 2 of The Diplomat is: Who survives a car bomb attack?
It seems likely that Conservative MP Merritt Grove is dead, and that Hal and Stuart (Ato Essando) were also seriously injured due to their close proximity to the explosion.
Whether or not Stewart is indeed injured, his relationship with Aidra (Arian) could have been wrapped up with more screen time in season two.
The pair’s relationship has endured enough work-related stress that nothing seems to be able to tear them apart, but maybe Stewart’s secret about moving back to the U.S. was just the final straw.
After spending weeks chasing down dead ends as to which country or organization was responsible for blowing up a British aircraft carrier, Kate and Denison suddenly realize that Prime Minister Trowbridge has been behind it all. How will they respond?
Talk about a situation that calls for diplomacy!
Will Kate actually become Vice President this season?
Now that Allison Janney has officially joined the cast as current Vice President Grace Payne, it doesn’t look like Kate’s path to the White House will be as smooth or quick as her agent hoped.
Let’s understand this for a moment. The cast is already strong – now where’s Allison Janney? We can’t wait!
What is certain is that the second season will continue with the amazing narrative rhythm of the first season.
The show’s signature balance of bureaucratic backstabbing, physical danger and humor is a great template for next season and all seasons to come.
There may have been too many time-sensitive plot threads in the Season 1 finale for Season 2 to begin with a significant time jump, but then again, the show has proven it has fun challenging expectations, so anything It’s all possible.
The Diplomat Season 2 Episodes
It hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but the first season had eight episodes, so it’s safe to assume that the second season will have eight episodes as well.
The first season of the show was nominated for an Emmy Award (Kelly Russell for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series) and two Golden Globe Awards (Kelly Russell for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “Diplomacy”). Official” nominated for Best Drama Series).
Here’s hoping Season 2 continues the show’s streak of award nominations and maybe even scores a win!
The Diplomat Returns Season 2 Cast List
Keri Russell confirmed to return as Kate Wheeler. Otherwise, it’s hard to guess who will come back, especially in a show that’s full of kidnappings, poisonings, and car bombs!
That said, it would be surprising if Rufus Sewell didn’t return as Hal. His absence will leave a huge romantic vacuum, especially since Kate’s flirtation with Denison seemed impossible in season one.
However, they did look great together in formal attire when they were in Paris.
Rory Kinnear will almost certainly return, even if only briefly, as Chancellor Trowbridge has a lot of explaining to do. It’s likely that many of the famous political officials from Season 1 will continue to appear in Season 2.
That means we should once again enjoy Michael McKean as President Rayburn, Miguel Sandoval as Secretary of State Miguel Cannon, and Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff Billy Appiah.
It would also be fun to spend more time with Denison’s charming and stylish sister Cecilia (T’Nia Miller).
“The Diplomat” Season 2 Cast Added
Allison Janney has been confirmed to join the cast as Vice President Grace Payne. The award-winning acting star is no stranger to the world of fast-talking — and fast pedestrian mall! ——A policy expert who has served in the West Wing for many years.
Could Russell’s real-life and “The Americans” spouse Matthew Rhys appear in season 2? Regardless, Russell hasn’t given a clear answer yet, but it’s not an answer either. Noright?
