Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 anime landmark Akira returned to movie screens across the United States and Canada on September 4 in a one-night 4K and IMAX event, and it’s still the anime community’s biggest talking point five days later. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures <a href="https://comicvibe.com/sports-entertainment-group-asxseg-mediaworks-acquisition-growth-and-debt-in-focus/” title=”Sports Entertainment Group (ASX:SEG): MediaWorks Acquisition, Growth and Debt in Focus”>Entertainment organized the run, and it played in both the original Japanese with subtitles and an English dub.

    Key Points

    • Akira played nationwide for a single night, September 4, 2026, in standard 4K and select IMAX auditoriums.

    • Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment handled the theatrical event across the U.S. and Canada.

    • The restoration builds on a 4K transfer that had already been licensed internationally for a 2025 theatrical run.

    • Both a Japanese-with-subtitles version and an English dub were offered at participating theaters.

AniTrendz first reported the screening date back in July, and the restoration behind it has been making the rounds for a while: distributor POM Anime had already licensed a 4K restoration of the film across roughly twenty countries for a summer 2025 theatrical rollout before Crunchyroll and Sony brought it to IMAX screens stateside this September.

Coverage of the event described it as a deliberately compressed release rather than a wide theatrical run. One recap of the rollout called it “a one-day-only event” built to generate a concentrated marketing moment and a box office bump without the commitment of an extended run, noting the same restoration remains available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and through Crunchyroll’s streaming library for anyone who missed the theatrical window.

Akira has earned the kind of reputation that makes a one-night rerelease worth planning a schedule around. Set in a dystopian Neo-Tokyo rebuilt after World War III, the film became a gateway title for an entire generation of Western anime fans in the years after its 1988 Japanese debut, and its influence on the genre’s visual language is still cited by animators and filmmakers decades later. LRM’s coverage of the announcement noted the film’s continued reputation as a benchmark for science-fiction and cyberpunk storytelling on screen.

The rerelease also landed a year after a long-gestating live-action Akira remake from director Taika Waititi was shelved, a coincidence that gave the original film’s IMAX return an extra layer of vindication for fans who never wanted a remake in the first place. Nearly four decades after Otomo redrew what an animated blockbuster could look like, the film still packs auditoriums on a single night’s notice, which says something neither a remake nor a streaming library slot can quite replicate. Whether the one-night format returns for another anniversary screening hasn’t been announced, but for one Friday night, Neo-Tokyo was back on the big screen where it started.
