The Most Viral Roblox Games Are About To Break Containment

Roblox is the biggest gaming platform on the planet, but its viral hits and the subcultures that sprout up around them have mostly been siloed from the rest of the internet. That’s about to change. Roblox Everywhere was announced on September 11, a way for the company, currently under investigation for child safety, to deliver games directly to players inside dedicated apps.

“Our vision for Roblox Everywhere is to enable creators to reach audiences where they already are,” the company wrote in a blog post about this week’s Roblox Developers Conference. “Soon, creators will have the option to make their games available as standalone apps across mobile, PC, and consoles, with Roblox powering the technology and services underneath.”

This will make it easier for people to enter the Roblox ecosystem and allow newcomers to play with those already on the Roblox apping features as well that have the potential to supercharge a platform that’s already bigger than the entirety of Steam

“By the end of this year, players will be able to join a game in-browser on Chrome (more browsers to follow) from a game’s Experience Details Page—no app or install required,” the company continued. “Web player allows players to click a link from anywhere (search, YouTube, X, an email from a friend, or a creator’s social channel) and start playing instantly.”

Oh wow! Roblox expands into an engine for standalone games, while Unreal Engine 6 expands its feature set with a standards based interoperable content ecosystem. The winner of this competition: developers! https://t.co/kMNoZdhZQO

Roblox also plans to have developers enable new features that will make offline play more seamless for people on the go, and make it easier for players to follow one another between games and chat across them. The company is investing in new tools to encourage the creation of 2D games (Roblox is currently dominated by 3D social sandboxes), and better discovery mechanisms to potentially lead to a more vibrant ecosystem less dominated by exploitative slop.

And of course, there’s generative AI. “Coming later this year, Scene Generator will power prompt-to-scene functionality across both Build and Studio, with greater creator control available in Studio,” Roblox revealed. “By providing a text prompt and reference image, creators can generate a fully functional layout—then refine it in Studio.” With this feature arriving alongside mobile-first development tools to make it easier to create short experiences, Roblox seems to be pulling the ripcord on its existing UGC production pipelines to buoy its flagging financials.

And what do shareholders love more than a financial services side business? Roblox also announced a new Roblox credit card today that will help it bypass Apple and Google’s app store taxes while also giving players discounts on Robux (the in-game currency) purchased with the credit card. “Roblox Card connects to Roblox Wallet, enabling creators to spend their available balance directly, anywhere it’s accepted,” the company wrote. “We plan to begin rolling out Roblox Card in 2027.”
