Apple Watch Series 12 improves many of the core components that power watchOS and the device’s health and fitness features, plus unlocks new AI capabilities. Here’s everything new in Apple Watch Series 12 vs Series 11.
Design and durability: New case options, Ceramic Shield 2, more
Apple Watch Series 12 comes in the same 42mm and 46mm options as before, but with some design and durability updates.
In terms of case options, Apple Watch Series 12 debuts a new Dark Bronze aluminum finish and also introduces Ceramic, which is available in Pearl White and Night Blue.
Aluminum models of Series 12 add Ceramic Shield 2 for tougher, more durable glass than what comparable Series 11 models had.
Additionally, there are minor size tweaks with the latest models:
- 42mm model is 37mm tall, up from Series 11’s 36mm
- 46mm model is 40mm tall, up from Series 11’s 39mm
The screen size remains the same, but the case being slightly larger results in bigger bezels.
Performance: New S11 chip, double the RAM

There’s a new, more powerful S11 chip in the Apple Watch Series 12, and it’s the first notable performance upgrade since 2023’s S9.
S11 enables new health and AI features that are exclusive to the latest models, as detailed below. Apple doesn’t say what impact it will have on other everyday tasks, but hopefully there’s a noticeable boost there too.
Apple Watch Series 12 also upgrades the memory of the Series 11, offering 4GB of RAM—double the 2GB from last year.
Health: New ‘Health Sensing System’ with key upgrades
With Apple Watch Series 12, Apple is introducing a new “Health Sensing System” that essentially represents an overhaul of the internal sensing components.
In real-world terms, here’s what’s changed and the benefits it brings per Apple:
- Heart rate tracking: Second-generation electrical heart sensor and always-on optical heart sensor enable high-frequency background heart rate tracking that you can view on new Heart Rate watch face complication
- HRV improvements: “now measured up to 24 times more often and available to view in a new section of the Heart Rate app”
- New Recovery HRV: “best for identifying daily signals of stress and recovery”
- Step tracking: More accurate, with new Steps complication to track steps in real time from watch face
Software: Audio Intelligence, new Readiness app, and more

It’s not often that new Apple Watch hardware comes with exclusive software features. But Apple has a variety of software-related updates that require Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4.
Audio Intelligence is what Apple calls a “brand-new class of Apple Intelligence features” powered by S11. Some features will be available at launch while others arrive in a software update in late 2026. New features include:
- Siri Recap: “[creates] high-level summaries of conversations that users can review later to jog their memory. When Siri Recap is turned on, after a conversation, Apple Intelligence automatically generates a title and key points in the new Siri app, allowing users to be more present and engaged in the moment.”
- Live Rewind: “[helps] users recall what was just said in conversation. A double press of the Digital Crown shows the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet, so users can catch something they may have missed or are less familiar with.”
- Shazam: “instantly detects the music playing around the user and automatically displays the song title and artist’s name on the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack”
- Sound Recognition: “[alerts] users who are deaf or hard of hearing of important sounds, even when their iPhone isn’t with them. This feature listens for sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying, and uses on-device intelligence to notify users when they’re detected.”
Joining AI features is a new Readiness app powered by Series 12’s overhauled health sensors. Apple says:
Apple Watch Series 12 introduces readiness, a new feature that analyzes a user’s recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to offer insight into their capacity for the day ahead. Readiness provides a single 0-10 score with a clear, actionable recommendation: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. This helps a user decide how to take on their day, whether they’re headed into a workday or tackling their training plan.
As mentioned above, Series 12 also adds new watch face complications for tracking your steps and heart rate.
Battery: Faster charging, outdoor workout gains

Apple Watch Series 12 supports faster charging than Series 11, reducing the amount of time you have to go without wearing it. Per Apple:
- Apple Watch Series 12: 15 minutes charge gets up to 12 hours battery life
- Apple Watch Series 11: 15 minutes charge gets up to 8 hours battery life
Additionally, while overall quoted battery life is still 24 hours this year, you can now get up to 10 hours of battery during an outdoor workout. That’s 25 percent more than Series 11 supported.
Connectivity: GPS improvement

There’s one more small change: Apple’s website says that Series 12 features “Precision L1 GPS.”
Apple Watch Series 12 is now available to pre-order at $399. It ships Friday, September 18.
