Alex Ross is a big fan of Kelly Thompson’s Absolute Wonder Woman series with Hayden Sherman and others. You don’t have to ask him; he’ll tell you every chance he gets in conversation… twice even, while interviewing him recently about his new OGN Marvel Dimensions. Ross, who has penned the character on several occasions including Kingdom Come and Wonder Woman: Spirit of Truth, says it’s the best thing he’s seen in some time.
“[DC’s Absolute line] becomes a good platform for talented people like Kelly Thompson to write the best Wonder Woman book I’ve read in years,” Ross tells Popverse. “No shade against the writer of the regular Wonder Woman book… I buy that one. I regularly read Tom King’s Wonder Woman, but I want to give special credit for the quality work she’s doing.”
Later on, when we asked what he was geeking out about, again he mentioned first of all getting “a big thrill out” of Absolute Wonder Woman. And it turns out, the feeling is mutual.
Back in June on John Siuntres’ excellent Word Balloon podcast, Kelly Thompson brought up Ross’ Kingdom Come, as well as Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Wonder Woman: Historia, as reference points “in thinking about how to deal with icons. How do you rebuild that? How do you re-present that? What do you have to preserve and what can be lost?”
Thompson also brings up that she found out through an unnamed colleague that Ross was a fan of her Absolute Wonder Woman run.
“I was like, please tell him I’m incredibly flattered. I’m obviously a huge fan, but more specifically, Kingdom Come and specifically his sketches and notes, and [Mark Waid]’s and all that stuff was incredibly useful in figuring out how to build it.”
