Three decades after Practical Magicwas released,Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are casting another spell on moviegoers.
Practical Magic 2 is now in theaters, with Bullock and Kidman reprising their roles as the witchy sisters from the 1998 cult classic. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are also returning to the franchise, while Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and The Kissing Booth‘s Joey King are among the newcomers to the cast.
Reviews have been mixed, with critics welcoming the reunion of Bullock and Kidman but questioning whether the sequel recaptures the original’s magic. Yahoo’s Brett Arnold called it “just as dopey as the first movie — arguably more so,” but predicted fans of the original would still have a good time.
The original Practical Magic wasn’t an obvious candidate for a sequel when it was released. The movie received mixed reviews and disappointed at the box office, making just $46.7 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. But it later developed a devoted following among millennial and Gen Z audiences, particularly women.
It’s not just Practical Magic making a comeback. A wave of sequels, reboots and revivals is bringing familiar characters and franchises back to screens — although not every attempted resurrection has made it to the finish line.
‘Clueless’ (1995)
Alicia Silverstone became a ’90s icon playing teen fashionista Cher Horowitz in the coming-of-age comedy Clueless. Now she’s preparing to step back into Cher’s designer shoes.
A sequel series for Paramount+ will find Cher all grown up, as a successful entrepreneur and mother raising a teenager of her own — a challenge that leaves her feeling “clueless” all over again.
Silverstone will also executive produce the series, which is expected to begin filming in 2027. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the 1995 movie, is among its other executive producers.
“The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher,” Silverstone told Today in 2025. “So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”
‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’ (1997)
Romy and Michele have another reunion on the calendar.
Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are returning as the best friends from the 1997 cult comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
Hulu’s sequel began filming in June, with Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell also reprising their roles. Sorvino wrote on Instagram, “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!'”
Robin Schiff, who wrote the original movie, also penned the script for the sequel. New cast members include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel and Breckin Meyer.
‘The X-Files’ (1993-2002)
The truth is out there — again. Sinners director Ryan Coogler is working on a new take on The X-Files, the sci-fi series that premiered in 1993.
The Hulu reboot will follow two FBI agents, played by The Odyssey‘s Himesh Patel and Till star Danielle Deadwyler, as they investigate unexplained phenomena. Coogler will write and direct the pilot episode, while Chris Carter, who created the original series, will serve as an executive producer.
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have remained tight-lipped about whether they will return as Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, the roles they made famous in the original series. “It’s entirely not possible for me to answer whether I will ever be a part of that,” Anderson told SYFY Wire. Meanwhile, Duchovny told the Hollywood Reporter, “There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point.”
‘Single White Female’ (1992)
The roommate-from-hell thriller Single White Female is getting a new spin.
The 1992 psychological thriller, which starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, is being remade with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and Bones and All‘s Taylor Russell.
The new version has been retitled Single Female, with Bodies Bodies Bodies screenwriter Sarah DeLappe writing the script.
The original follows a newly single New Yorker who advertises for a roommate, only for the relationship between the two women to take an increasingly disturbing turn.
‘Cliffhanger’ (1993)
Sylvester Stallone’s action movie Cliffhanger is returning to the big screen — but without its original star.
Stallone was initially set to reprise his role as mountain rescuer Gabe Walker in a sequel to the 1993 film. After he exited the project, it was reworked as a reboot starring Lily James and Pierce Brosnan.
The new movie will follow Brosnan as mountaineer Ray Cooper, whose family is targeted by kidnappers. James plays his daughter Naomi, who escapes the attack and must confront her traumatic past as she tries to save her family.
Speaking to Collider last year, James said the climbing scenes would be “as real and visceral and as raw as possible.” She added, “It’s going to be really different from the original, which I love, but I’m really proud of the work everyone put into this to get it to where it is now.”
The ‘Buffy’ revival that wasn’t
Buffy the Vampire Slayer came close to rising from the dead (again).
Sarah Michelle Gellar returned as Buffy Summers last year in an unaired pilot episode for Hulu, alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer. Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Hamnet, directed the episode.
But the revival wasn’t meant to be. In March 2026, Gellar confirmed that Hulu had decided not to move forward with the series. “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you,” she said in an Instagram video. “And this doesn’t change any of that.”
