Clay County student arrested over death note that appears to show similarities to anime series

Fla. – A 12-year-old student at Argyle Elementary School is facing possible criminal charges after a classmate caught him writing what Clay County Sheriff’s Office is calling a “death note” — a list of names of students and staff

Deputies were called to the school after the classmate alerted a teacher. The boy was arrested and taken to a juvenile justice detention center. The sheriff’s office alerted the public about the child’s arrest on Sept. 4.

After News4JAX posted about the arrest, viewers quickly drew parallels to a Japanese animated TV <a href="https://comicvibe.com/watch-iron-man-series/” title=”Watch Iron Man (Series)”>series called Death Note. In the show, a high school boy finds a book that gives him the power to kill anyone whose name he writes in it.

Deputies have not confirmed whether the child knew about the show, but the note has drawn comparisons to the series’ premise. Deputies also noted that the totality of the situation led to the arrest.

Nicole Davidson-Harshaw, a licensed mental health counselor with eight years of experience at DuPont Counseling Group, says the behavior may be a child’s way of coping.

“If someone is in a situation in a school environment or in their social peer environment where they feel like this is a way to get attention, this is a way for them to process some level of unfortunate circumstances — whether it’s conflict with another peer or a teacher they don’t like or something similar that makes them feel uncomfortable — this is an unfortunate coping skill,” Davidson-Harshaw said.

She encouraged parents to keep the lines of communication open with their children.

“Give a place that can be carved out for you and your child to have conversations and never stop listening,” Davidson-Harshaw said. “Our children have big voices and they know what they are saying, even if they are a little confused.”

Davidson-Harshaw and investigators say this case is a critical reminder for parents to talk to their children about the difference between television and reality. Research does not show a direct link between media and cause-and-effect behavior, but experts encourage parents to find out if something is mentally or emotionally troubling their child.

If your child is re-enacting dark themes or expressing troubling thoughts, experts recommend talking with them directly about the consequences of those actions.

    • Trust your instincts
    • Consider counseling as an option
    • Maintain ongoing conversations with your children

Because the case involves a juvenile, it is not yet known what will happen next for the child. He could face criminal charges and disciplinary action through the school district.
