Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana Mat Piscatella on social media has revealed there was a boost in hardware sales for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for the week ending August 29, which is when Rockstar unveiled the first Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay.
Combined sales for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S increased 14 percent week-on-week or by fewer than eighth thousand units.PS5 sales increased 17 percent, while Xbox Series X|S sales were up nine percent.
“In the US, combined PS5/XBS hardware unit sales for the week ending Aug 29 increased 14% versus the prior week. PS5 grew 17%, XBS 9%,” said Piscatella. “The combined increase across both platforms amounted to less than 8k units.”
Piscatella responding to reply said he doesn’t expect an “earth shattering” boost in sales from GTA 6.
“I expect a modest bump to hardware from GTA, similar perhaps to the impact GTA V had on PS3/360 at launch,” he said. “It was noticeable but not earth shattering.”
This follows the report that hardware sales in the UK jumped by a third during the same week.
Sales for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the UK increased by 33 percent and 34 percent, respectively, compared to the prior week. Nintendo Switch 2 sales saw rose by about a third due to the price increase that occurred this week on September 1.
Grand Theft Auto VI will launch for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
