Nintendo is planning to run a big sale this weekend. The company will be selling games as well as other merch and accessories for up to 30 percent off. And it’s all thanks to “tariff-related refunds” it received from the United States government. Those are the same funds it doesn’t want to give back to customers and has fought in court to keep.
On Thursday, Nintendo announced an upcoming “Customer Appreciation Sale” that will kick off on September 13 and end on September 26. The Mario maker says it is one of its “largest promotions ever.” It plans on dropping the price on digital and physical games, various bundles, downloadable content, accessories, amiibos, and Nintendo-themed clothing. The sale will happen across the eShop, Nintendo Stores, and select “participating retail locations.” No official info yet on what will be discounted.
“The Customer Appreciation Sale is our way of saying thank you to Nintendo players for their continued support and is made possible in part by tariff-related refunds,” posted the company on its website. “While Nintendo absorbed most tariff-related costs, the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible.
Earlier this year, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against the United States Treasury Department, Homeland Security, and Customs & Border Protection to get back tariff money it paid after the Supreme Court ruled President Trump’s tariffs were illegal. Nintendo has also been fighting some customers in court who have been trying to force the company to hand over some of those related refunds.
Perhaps Nintendo hopes this big sale will win people over and fans will stop asking about their refunds. At the very least, it is nice to see the company passing on some savings back to people after folks were forced to pay more than they should have for Switch 2 consoles and controllers last year.
