    Key Points

    • Andrew Garfield stars as Sam Altman in the first trailer for Artificial.

    • The film was dropped by Amazon in June, months after the company struck a partnership deal with Altman’s OpenAI.

    • Neon acquired the project and will release it on Christmas.

Three months after Artificialwas dropped by Amazon, the first look at the controversial new Luca Guadagnino film has been released.

“We opened Pandora’s box together,” Garfield declares as Altman. “The future is inevitable. Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse. And we get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world. I’m so excited to see it.”

Artificial also stars Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O’Dowd, and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk.

“I don’t know Sam Altman,” Garfield recently toldEsquire. “I’ve never met him. I was going off of the script and court transcripts and interviews and research, and we were telling a story. But I think anyone who takes on that level of responsibility for a company or a technology that you know is going to do a hell of a lot of damage to the soul of humanity [must have] a certain ability to dissociate.”

Initially viewed as a likely awards player this fall, Artificial was dealt a blow when Amazon MGM Studios announced in June that the company was no longer releasing the film. The shocking decision became a little less shocking when connecting the dots that Amazon struck a partnership deal with OpenAI earlier this year.

“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” a spokesperson for Amazon told Entertainment Weekly in a statement at the time. “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”

Shortly thereafter, Neon acquired the rights to the project, which will have a limited release on Christmas, before expanding wide in January 2027.
