The YouTube star’s story of a farm boy with a cursed power becomes a 2D film directed by Kellan Stover and animated by Powerhouse Animation; production underway for 2028 release
Godslap, the comic created by YouTube star and streamer Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White, is now in production as a 2D hand-drawn animated feature from Lyrical Animation and White’s own Meatier Productions, set for a 2028 release. And there’s a new teaser that just debuted. Kellan Stover directs from a screenplay by Lyrical Animation creative director Daniel Dominguez and Lyrical Animation head Jacob Robinson, with Powerhouse Animation Studios handling the animation.
White is one of the most prolific creators online, with more than 25 million followers across his channels and platforms and roughly 145 million views a month; his YouTube videos average 1.8 million views and his nightly livestreams draw an average of 15,000 concurrent viewers. The Godslap comic has sold more than 100,000 copies.
In the story, an 18-year-old farm boy raised in hiding by a father who calls his extraordinary power a curse loses everything in a single night of rebellion. He must then decide whether the force living in his hands makes him a monster or the only person alive capable of bringing down the corporation that owns the world.
The announcement follows Lyrical Animation’s recent deal to produce an adaptation of PlayStation’s game Bloodborne with PlayStation Productions and creator and gamer Sean McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, with parent company Lyrical Media co-financing alongside Sony Pictures.
“We’ve been longtime fans of Charlie, so getting the opportunity to bring his anime-inflected, hilariously violent comic Godslap to life was a dream come true,” Dominguez said. “It’s one of the funniest, most non-stop surprising, and thematically urgent comics to come out in the last decade, and a perfect story to adapt as an animated feature.”
“It’s always been a dream of mine to make an animated movie, especially with a studio like Powerhouse, so I couldn’t be more excited,” White said. “We’ve got an amazing team and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’re making.”
Powerhouse Animation Studios, the Austin studio behind Netflix‘s Castlevania, Castlevania: Nocturne, Blood of Zeus, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, Skull Island, and Seis Manos, became the first Animation Guild shop in a right-to-work state in 2023. Meatier Productions, led by White with Matt Phillips, Danny Palmer, Jackson Clarke, and Robert Meyers, created and produced Godslap and Plague Seeker. Lyrical Media, based in Los Angeles and New York, develops, produces, and finances film, television, games, animation, podcasts, and graphic novels; its upcoming film slate includes Osgood Perkins’ The Young People with NEON and Adam Wingard’s Onslaught with A24.
Dan Sarto is Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Animation World Network.
