Streaming platform Netflix is developing the series “Ravenloft,” a live-action adaptation of the popular world of the game “Dungeons & Dragons.” The project is being developed by writer and executive producer John August, executive producer Alfonso Cuarón, and Hasbro Entertainment.
This is a new project and is not related to the series “The Forgotten Realms”, a live-action adaptation set in the D&D world of the same name, which Netflix put into development in early 2025.
Described as a prestigious fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance, “Ravenloft” delivers adventures through character-driven stories, dark magic and supernatural intrigue.
The series will focus on the rise of vampire and Dark Lord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation follows his journey from tragic antihero to one of the most infamous villains in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
Ravenloft, one of the most popular worlds in the Dungeons & Dragons game, was introduced by Tracy and Laura Hickman in 1983. Since then, it has inspired more than a hundred official novels, board game supplements, video games, and companion rulebooks, as well as countless fan-created works.
Both Ravenloft and Strahd were mentioned in the recently concluded series “Stranger Things,” another hugely popular Netflix coming-of-age horror title that weaved Dungeons & Dragons into its storyline throughout its run. The series even began and ended with scenes of the main characters playing the game.
The project marks Cuarón’s return to Netflix eight years after his film Roma premiered on the platform. The film went on to make history with 10 Oscar nominations, including Netflix’s first nomination for Best Picture. It also brought the platform its first Oscars outside of the Best Documentary Short Film category – for Best International Feature Film, as well as two awards for Cuarón, for Best Director and Best Cinematography. He won two more Oscars for Gravity, for Direction and Editing.
Dungeons & Dragons, developed by Wizards of the Coast, follows humans, elves, orcs, and other fantasy creatures through wars, treasure hunts, and various adventures. The game is led by a person known as the Dungeon Master, and features multi-sided dice.
Since D&D is one of Hasbro’s most important brands, it has made the development of a live-action television series a priority over the past five years, in parallel with the 2023 film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
