Netflix is taking some big hits to its television catalogue in the coming weeks. With binge-worthy favorites like Shameless, Detroiters, and Dawson’s Creekall set to depart in October, the titanic streamer is also dropping both seasons of Halo on October 1st.
Based on the legendary best-selling video game series, Halofollows a futuristic war between humanity and a coalition of aliens determined to destroy our species. At the center of the story is genetically modified super soldier John-117, better known as Master Chief, as he leads the fight to save humanity. The show was originally a Paramount+ exclusive, but despite generally positive reviews, Halowas canceled after two seasons. It quickly made its way over to Netflix, but now it seems that Halo‘s time on Netflix is coming to an unceremonious end.
The Removal Puts The Future of Halo In Doubt
Exactly a year after landing on American Netflix screens, Halois once again departing for galaxies anew. While third-party licensing agreements from Paramount have typically been short-term, Halowas an unexpected hit on Netflix. The series had a true liftoff, rocketing into the Top 10 on release, and Season 1 alone earned nearly 20 million views. The initial bump in popularity was so big that viewership even increased on Paramount+, and fans of the show hoped for a Season 3 revival on Netflix.
That wasn’t to be. Although the series has a solid 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences weren’t quite as engaged as the initial numbers suggested. Viewership for Season 2 plummeted, and considering the high budget for such an ambitious sci-fi universe, Netflix clearly thinks Halois not worth the investment. The series will now continue being a Paramount+ exclusive, where its future seems uncertain at best. Those wishing to finish the fight on Netflix will have until September 30th to do so.
