Nintendo bans Switch 2 consoles despite owners avoiding pirated games

Starting on September 5th, social media has experienced an increasing number of reports about Switch 2 console bans. Owners seeing error code 2124-4508 can’t access Nintendo online services. While this can happen after playing pirated games, posters claim they only boot legitimate cartridges.

    A global crisis?

The Switch Help subreddit has become ground zero for complaints. Although Asia seems particularly affected, the issue is impacting buyers in Europe and the United States. Once banned, gamers can no longer use Nintendo Switch Online and the eShop. As a result, they are potentially blocked from owned Switch and Switch 2 games.

OutlandishnessHour37 documents buying a new Switch 2 console from the Tokopedia Indonesian marketplace in June 2026. There is no evidence of a repackaged handheld, and its serial number appears in the device’s settings and on the box. The player says that all the physical games used with the system were also new.

One potential explanation is a 1-year Nintendo Switch Online redemption. Rather than the eShop, the same Indonesian retailer supplied the code. The storefront may have obtained it from a fraudulent third-party seller. Nevertheless, not a piracy advocate, OutlandishnessHour37 awaits a response from the gaming giant’s support desk.

    Looking for a pattern

The story of the Japanese MathPrestigious is even more curious. They bought a console and games, including Zelda: Breath of the Wild, from the reputable Yodobashi Camera. Two days later, error code 2124-4508 popped up on the handheld’s screen. The Reddit user stressed that they had no pre-owned cartridges, but a support agent alleged that illegal software was at fault.

It’s difficult to judge the scope of the Switch 2 bans from social media. Still, a Chinese gamer believes they are widespread in the country. At least 150 RedNote posters report being blocked from network features.

In June 2025, Nintendo took similar action when the MIG Flash makers updated the device’s firmware for the new console. This made it possible to boot pirated original Switch titles on the hardware. However, the reason for the latest rash of bans is less clear.

Without a reversal, consumers won’t be able to redownload digital purchases or install Game-Key Cards. Because the restrictions are hardware-based, switching accounts is not a solution.
