Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir was a shockingly well-received entry into the vast Spider-Man franchise—or the Spider-Verse, if you will—when it debuted on May 25. The Prime Video series’ overwhelmingly popular reception (with the show currently sitting at a 92% critic score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes) seemed to defy the odds in myriad ways, from being a non-MCU Marvel show that gained considerable interest to avoiding issues with the internet’s tendency to poke a bit of fun at Cage. However, it seems that show has already come to a permanent end after just eight episodes, despite many fans’ hopes for a season 2.

As reported by Variety, Prime Video has cancelled Spider-Noir, and it will not be returning for a second season. As noted by the outlet, this shocking news comes just before the Emmys begin—and this season, Spider-Noir has an impressive 11 nominations. The outcome of those nominations of course remains to be seen, but this timing nevertheless underscores just how unexpected, and arguably a bit bewildering, this choice is. For now, there’s no clear explanation for why this call was made, but fans are likely to have strong reactions in response to the news.

What Does This Cancellation Mean for the Spider-Verse?

The cancellation of Spider-Noir is significant enough in and of itself, but it does also have larger implications. Particularly considering that the show has 11 Emmy nominations and critic and audience RT scores that are both over 90%, it’s difficult to see the logic behind axing the show and what that might mean for what should have been multiple Spider-Verse projects being worked on with Prime Video and Sony. In fact, that same Variety article mentions that there is already a second series in development that pulls from the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, although that exact title has not yet been announced. One has to wonder, though, if that project is really going to move forward if a show that seemed so successful is getting shut down after just one season.

This unexpected announcement also comes as the third and final addition to the Miles Morales Spider-Verse trilogy of movies, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is slated to hit theaters on June 18, 2027, and while reports indicate that a solo Spider-Punk movie and a solo Spider-Gwen movie are both in the works. Granted, these are movies, and that’s always going to be at least a slightly different arena than streaming shows in terms of what sticks, what gets cancelled, and what never gets off the ground. But even with that in mind, it certainly doesn’t feel like good news that Spider-Noir was just pulled after what seemed to be a very solid first season, and it will be interesting (and perhaps devastating) to see what this ultimately means for myriad other projects that could easily spin out of the Spider-Verse.
