Project DualPlay Mini is Acer’s wild new handheld and laptop hybrid

PC gamers looking for portable hardware have increasingly found themselves choosing between traditional gaming laptops and handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck. Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini takes a different approach by attempting to combine both form factors into a single machine, similar to the OneXPlayer X2 Mini handheld that we have recently covered.

At its core, the DualPlay Mini is a Windows gaming handheld, similar in concept to Acer’s Predator Atlas 8. What makes the prototype stand out is its transforming design. The display can flip around while a built-in keyboard folds out, allowing the system to switch between a conventional handheld and a miniature laptop.

In handheld configuration, players get the familiar controls expected from a modern PC gaming handheld, including dual analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and shoulder controls. Flip the screen and unfold the keyboard, however, and the device becomes a compact laptop. There is no integrated trackpad, meaning anyone wanting traditional mouse control will need to bring a separate mouse. External displays are also supported, potentially making the system more practical as a desktop PC.

The biggest limitation may be the 8-inch display. That is perfectly reasonable for gaming, but considerably less appealing for productivity. Unless the DualPlay Mini is paired with an external monitor, its tiny screen would make it difficult to imagine replacing a conventional laptop. Still, it could serve as a convenient travel companion, particularly for users who want to play PC games that are awkward to control with a gamepad.

Acer has yet to reveal complete specifications for the prototype. Although it shares some design ideas and technology with the Predator Atlas 8, the DualPlay Mini is a separate concept rather than an announced retail product. As a result, there is currently no release date or indication that consumers will actually be able to buy it.

And that may ultimately be for the best. Combining two devices sounds great in theory, but the DualPlay Mini could inherit the disadvantages of both. As a handheld, the extra keyboard and transformation hardware could make it considerably bulkier and heavier than dedicated gaming handhelds. As a laptop, meanwhile, its compact dimensions and 8-inch screen would make it an awkward productivity machine.

The concept is certainly intriguing, especially for travelers who would rather carry one device than two. However, Acer has a difficult balancing act ahead if it ever decides to turn the DualPlay Mini into a real product.
