    Flipkart Enters India’s Micro

Walmart-owned Flipkart is preparing to enter India’s rapidly expanding micro-drama market, bringing short-form scripted entertainment directly to its main shopping app. The move marks another step in the e-commerce company’s broader push to build a content-led ecosystem around its commerce platform.

Flipkart has partnered with Terribly Tiny Tales (TTT) and Nexus Venture Partners-backed Pratilipi, among others, to create micro-dramas exclusively for its platform. The content will be made available to users through a dedicated section within the Flipkart app.

A New Entertainment Tab Takes Shape

Flipkart is expected to roll out the micro-drama format through a separate tab on its main app. The initiative is designed to encourage users to spend more time on the platform while making the app a destination for entertainment as well as shopping.

The company will also feature content from Pinkvilla, the digital entertainment and infotainment platform in which Flipkart acquired a majority stake in September 2025. Flipkart had said the acquisition was aimed at expanding its content footprint and strengthening engagement with Gen Z and millennial audiences.

The addition of micro-dramas gives Flipkart another content format through which it can engage users beyond its core e-commerce offering.

    Micro-Dramas Find a Growing Audience

Flipkart’s entry comes at a time when micro-dramas are gaining significant traction in India. The format typically features short, episodic stories designed for mobile viewing, with individual episodes generally lasting from under a minute to a few minutes.

According to Lumikai’s State of India Interactive Media Report 2025, India’s micro-drama market crossed $300 million in 2025. The report estimates that the segment could reach $4.5 billion by 2030, making it one of the fastest-growing areas of India’s digital entertainment market. The segment had also reached 100 million monthly active users and 450 million downloads, according to the report.

Several specialist platforms have already entered the space, including Kuku TV, Eloelo’s Story TV, Dashverse’s DashReels and ShareChat’s Quick TV. Major entertainment platforms are also exploring the format as audience interest in short, mobile-first storytelling continues to grow.

Content Could Create New Commerce Opportunities

For Flipkart, the strategy could eventually extend beyond simply increasing engagement. Micro-dramas could provide additional opportunities for advertising and brand integration, including product placements and the incorporation of products into storylines.

This approach fits with Flipkart’s broader interest in connecting entertainment with commerce. By keeping users within its ecosystem for longer periods, the company could create more opportunities to introduce brands and products alongside entertainment content.

The growing interest from advertisers is also adding momentum to the format. Saregama-owned Pocket Aces has indicated that advertisers are increasingly setting aside dedicated budgets for micro-drama campaigns, suggesting that brands are beginning to explore the format as a distinct advertising opportunity.

    Retention Remains a Major Challenge

Despite the rapid growth of the category, attracting users is only part of the challenge. Keeping them engaged over the long term remains critical for micro-drama platforms competing for attention.

Pocket FM recently shut down its Pocket TV micro-drama app after launching the service, choosing instead to concentrate reitive pressure facing standalone micro-drama platforms and the difficulty of sustaining engagement after the initial user-acquisition phase

Flipkart’s model is different because the micro-drama service will sit inside an established e-commerce app rather than operating as a separate destination. Whether the format can consistently increase engagement while contributing to Flipkart’s wider content-to-commerce strategy will become clearer as the company expands the offering.

With India’s micro-drama market growing rapidly, Flipkart’s entry brings another major digital platform into an increasingly competitive entertainment segment, while giving the e-commerce company a new way to combine content, advertising and commerce within its existing ecosystem.
