Anime director and animator Yuji Yanase dies at 59

Veteran anime director and animator Yuji Yanase has succumbed to a myocardial infarction, MAHO FILM president and CEO Junji Murataconfirmed on Wednesday.

Yanase passed away on 22 August, and his family has already held a private funeral for close relatives. The studio expressed deep gratitude for his extensive contributions to their creative output over the years.

At the time of his death, Yanase was simultaneously directing two televisioprogrammes that were broadcastingng in the summer 2026 anime season. These were «The World’s Strongest Rearguard» and «The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne».

Tributes and a three-decade animation legacy

Following the announcement production committees for both current shows released statements praising his leadership. Colleagues remembered his warm personality and the passion he brought to the studio floor.

«Director Yanase provided us with immense support and led the production site for this work with passion and a warm personality,» the committee for «The World’s Strongest Rearguard» wrote in a social media statement.

Early career

Yuji Yanase built a prolific career that began in the mid-1990s. He initially gained recognition as an animation director on prominent titles such as «Saber Marionette J» in 1996 and «Mashin Hero Wataru» in 1997 before working on the 2001 adaptation of «Shaman King».

Later in his career he stepped into the role of series director for various fantasy adaptations. His recent portfolio featured multiple projects produced at MAHO FILM, where he became a key figure in the studio’s pipeline. Yanase helmed popular titles that helped establish the company’s reputation for producing light-hearted isekai adventures.

His sudden passing leaves a significant void at MAHO FILM and marks the loss of an experienced talent who dedicated over 30 years to the Japanese animation industry.
