You wanted an Absolute Zatanna book? Good news: Absolute Wonder Woman’s Kelly Thompson does too, and has an idea for it

Yenom Ym Ekat! Writer Thompson says for an Absolute Zatanna to happen, “the timing will need to be right”

Read one single issue of Absolute Wonder Woman, and I don’t have to tell you that Kelly Thompson has big plans. Ever since the veteran comics writer and artistHayden Sherman teamed up to tell the story of a Diana that was raised in Hell instead of Themyscira, the world of DC’s Absolute line has been getting bigger with every issue. But here’s the thing – there are plans for Thompson’s story that stretch even beyond Diana’s epic saga…

Specifically, into an Absolute Zatanna spinoff.

Thompson revealed as much during a recent chat with Comic Frontier, where the longtime comics writer began by breaking down why Zatanna showed up in the pages of Absolute Wonder Woman in the first place.

“I was always thinking about Zatanna for a bunch of reasons,” Thompson said, “She’s a great character for starters, and her friendship with Diana in the main universe is interesting and I’d love to see more of it — but the main one was of course, that Absolute Diana’s story is much more based in and built around magic. So it seemed a natural choice.”

That “natural choice” led to both a sleek new character design and new Absolute history for DC’s magical hero, introduced to AWW in issue #16, that had fans clamoring for more. Thompson and Sherman were “delighted with the response,” of course, and now the character’s future is very much on Thompson’s mind.

“I do think a spinoff is a possibility,” the writer teased, “I have an interesting idea — but it has to be positioned correctly — and DC is being very smart about the Absolute line, in my opinion, and being careful about how big they grow the line. So I’m optimistic, but the timing will need to be right.”
