The first in-depth, definitive documentary about the late Matthew Perry is coming to Netflix in October, the streaming service announced September 1. The One About Matthew Perry is a documentary series about the beloved Friends star, told by some of the people who knew him best, including his sister and some “lifelong best friends.”
Perry died of acute effects of ketamine on October 28, 2023, at age 54. He was found unresponsive in his jacuzzi in his Los Angeles home. The One About Matthew Perry is tied to the three-year anniversary of the actor’s death.
“Told through intimate testimonies from close family and friends, this documentary event reveals the real Matthew Perry — generous, funny, vulnerable, larger than life — and the battles he fought to become the man behind the icon,” Netflix shares. “A raw record of a life lived in full, and the honesty that became his greatest legacy.”
The intimate three-part series is directed by Emmy Award winner Mary Robertson and produced by Maxine Productions, a part of Sony Pictures Television.

The One About Matthew Perry comes out on Tuesday, October 27, on Netflix. Its title is a reference to the titles of Friends episodes, all of which started with “The One With…,” “The One Where…,” etc.
“Anchored through never-before-heard testimonies from his sister Mia Perry Bowick and lifelong best friends, and featuring unreleased photos and videos from the Perry family’s private archive, the three-part series traces his journey from rising comedic star to the man the world still loves as their favorite Friend,” Netflix shares. “Firsthand memories from his creative collaborators and friends who adored him are woven with candid new details on his private struggles, honoring the legacy of honesty and advocacy he leaves behind.”

Netflix said that some of Perry’s lifelong friends will be featured in the documentary but didn’t explicitly state that any of the stars of Friends — Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer — participated.

“Matthew Perry was one of the comedic geniuses of our time,” director Robertson said in a statement. “Through his many films, TV and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing, he made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone. He also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story. That’s why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure.”
Said Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick: “It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction. As his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work to which I’ve devoted my life. Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved. I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind.”
Robertson also executive produces alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman, and Aaron Saidman, with co-executive producer Lora Moftah and producer Jessica Call. It’s a production of Maxine Productions, a part of Sony Pictures Television.
