Murdoku and the Boom of Adult Activity Books: Puzzles, Pop Culture, and Digital Detox
Adult pastime publications that merge puzzles with pop-culture references and crime-solving challenges have turned into a notable force in the book market. Murdoku, which has moved over 140,000 units in Spain, stands at the forefront of a rapidly expanding category often linked to screen-free relaxation.
What once was the newspaper crossword carried onto the subway or into a dentist’s waiting room has evolved. Now the spotlight falls on a purple-covered notebook featuring a house-shaped sudoku grid, or a hardcover volume filled with tri
These grown-up puzzle books, the newest twist on a classic hobby, are no longer just a seasonal summer item. Within this field, one subcategory dominates: solving a homicide using only a pencil, an eraser, and a sudoku layout.
The movement started roughly ten years back with adult coloring books, often promoted as art therapy or stress relief, containing mandalas, floral designs, and scenic views. What seemed like a fleeting warm-weather trend gained lasting traction, leading to a more elaborate version: the adult activity book, a modern take on the traditional newsstand puzzle collection, now enriched with a key differentiator—popular culture.
Smartphones did not eliminate this analog pastime; rather, both now exist side by side, much like online cooking tutorials have not replaced printed recipe collections, or how television did not spell the end for radio.
Blackie Books recognized the opportunity early. Its line of adult activity books has reached its 14th edition, released annually each summer, with total sales surpassing 250,000 copies based on the publisher’s own data. The newest edition includes 60 tasks spanning music, cinema, television, literature, science, and athletics, aimed at keeping the mind sharp.
This success prompted the company to expand the brand: the Cuaderno Kids for children aged six and up; the Cuaderno Golden for older audiences, featuring memory exercises and tri, a Catalan-language variant highlighting regional icons like Merce Rodoreda and the castellers
Other publishers have found their own angles without relying on crime themes. Debate released an activity book by El Mundo Today that challenges readers to separate fact from fiction, while GeoPlaneta has issued a fifth travel-themed activity volume, complete with music playlists and food guides.
If any single title captures the current moment, it is Murdoku. This notebook, recognizable by its purple cover, has exceeded 140,000 sales in Spain and performed strongly at various spring book fairs this year. Its approach reworks the standard sudoku: each puzzle arranges a set of suspects across a grid, ensuring no repetition in any row or column, with the empty cell indicating the victim’s location; the suspect aligned with that cell is revealed as the culprit.
Challenges grow harder as the book advances, leading some stores to host live solving events. The creator is Manuel Garand, a Canadian puzzle maker based in Montreal, whose work has also appeared in the Financial Times.
Given the book’s popularity and the imitations it has spawned, a website offering free Murdoku-style puzzles has emerged. As of now, it features 35 puzzles, despite still being in an early stage.
Another major player is Murdle, titled Resuelve el crimen in Spain, also It employs a distinct method: rather than a sudoku grid, it provides narrative hints about suspects, weapons, and locations that must be matched to identify the offender
This series has grown to three volumes plus a children’s version. Its author, American G.T. Karber, initially posted a daily case online before achieving print success. Espasa has entered the field with Los casos de Agatha Christie: 100 acertijos y un misterio por resolver, the first licensed activity book centered on the British author, allowing readers to adopt the roles of Poirot or Miss Marple.
Further examples include El crimen del verano, which brings the format to beaches and pools with 121 suspects and clues embedded in sudokus, crosswords, and number pyramids, and Crimigramas, which conceals the murderer within word searches. While none of these puzzle types are original on their own, pairing them with a mystery narrative transforms the reader from a passive observer into an active investigator, one puzzle at a time.
This enthusiasm for paper-based activities also reflects a growing fatigue with digital devices. It is telling that many of these books are marketed as tools for escaping the online world, offering a break from alerts and deadlines, reclaiming leisure time once consumed by smartphones.
There is also a practical rationale: observers of the trend note that such games engage attention, memory, and cognitive flexibility, though no definitive research yet explains their appeal.
Nobody anticipates a printed hobby rivaling the complexity of video games, and that is not the goal. Instead, it occupies a distinct space: brief moments of mental engagement without a screen, an experience increasingly sought after as part of the activity itself.
