‘Guardians Of The Video Game’
South Korea’s Finecut has secured international sales rights to Guardians Of The Video Game, an upcoming animated feature based on the popular webtoon of the same name.
The first footage from the 3D animated film will be shown to buyers next week at TIFF: The Market.
Directed by Uhm Young-sik, it revolves around an organisation that secretly operates and guards the world of video games. The story follows an exiled guardian of the gaming world who falls from cutting-edge 3D games into an old, forgotten title and must guide its hero to the end of the game – uncovering a conspiracy to both destroy him and the game itself.
Now in post-production, it is set for a local release in South Korea later this year.
The film is based on a Naver webtoon written and illustrated by Gasfard, which was serialised from 2014 to 2021, recording 245 million views, and was further adapted into a mobile game.
Director Uhm is known for 2023’s Running Man: Revengers and the animation segment of tvN series Yumi’s Cells. He also co-directed 2019’s Red Shoes And The Seven Dwarfs, which Finecut sold to sold to 120 countries with a voice cast including Chloë Grace Moretz and Sam Claflin.
Locus Animation, a leading South Korean animation and VFX studio, has produced the feature. Its previous titles include Red Shoes And The Seven Dwarfsand Kim Dong-chul’s Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning, which was released last year and has a sequel in the works.
Finecut’s latest slate includes Youm Kyu-bock’s 3D animation Long Long Night, set to world premiere in Toronto’s Centrepiece section, and Hong Sangsoo’s Nowhere To Lay My Eyes, which recently won a hat-trick of awards including best director at Locarno.
