PlayStation customers could get money from $7.85 million Sony settlement. Here’s who qualifies

PlayStation customers may be eligible for part of a $7.85 million settlement payout from Sony after a class-action lawsuit alleged the company inflated the prices of some of its games. 

The lawsuit, Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment, accused Sony of violating federal antitrust law and other state laws by creating a monopoly for PlayStation games, thus causing prices to be higher than they would have otherwise in the PlayStation store. 

Although the lawsuit was originally settled in 2024, it was rejected twice during the approval process. A judge granted preliminary approval in May after another approval process was started in April. 

Here’s how to claim part of the PlayStation settlement. 

Who is eligible to receive money from the PlayStation Sony settlement? 

PlayStation customers who purchased an eligible video game through the PlayStation Network store between April 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2023 are automatically considered part of the settlement class. 

Eligible games include parts of franchises such as “Call of Duty,” “The Last of Us” and “Resident Evil.” Sports games from the WWE, NBA 2K and Madden franchises were also listed as part of the settlement.

What do I do to opt into the settlement? 

Eligible members of the settlement class are automatically included, and deposits resulting from the settlement will automatically be made into the payment accounts of eligible PSN accounts. 

The deadline for customers with deactivated PSN accounts to submit a request for a check was Aug. 27, and the deadline to be excluded from the settlement class was July 2. 

How much can I expect to get as part of the PlayStation settlement?

The exact amount that an individual settlement class member could expect to receive hasn’t been determined yet. Compensation will not be coming in cash – funds will automatically be deposited in customers’ PSN account wallets. 

According to the settlement website, up to 25% of the settlement payment will go towards attorneys’ fees and other administrative expenses. 

When will I receive compensation?

The fairness hearing – where the settlement will face final approval and the final amount will be confirmed – is set for Oct. 15. Any other updates will be posted on the settlement website. Payments will likely be distributed in the months following the final confirmation if there is no appeal.
