Get ready to jump into a super robot anime show from the 1970s when you check out 70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X (just Geppy-X). This title is a remake of 70s Robot Anime Geppy-X that was released in 1999 for the PlayStation. The original game was based on a fictional show and had fully hand-drawn anime cutscenes that are presented like episodes of that fake Geppy-X show. Developer Implicit Conversations, along with publisher Bliss Brain, has released a fully remastered version of this title, making it available worldwide in HD and not restricted to only Japan like the original game was.
As soon as you begin playing, you are thrust into an episode of Geppy-X, complete with a show intro and theme song; you aren’t just watching a super robot anime, you are playing it! The core of the game is an arcade shoot ‘em up that has you playing as one of three characters piloting their own unique mechs. Each of these robots has a unique type and abilities: X1 is a Balanced Type that has versatile and reliable firepower and has X-Flare as its large attack; X2 is a Speed Type that is very mobile and is able to dodge, and its main attack is the X Seeker, which hits enemies across the screen; and X3 is a Power Type, and its main attacks require you to get close to the enemy before unleashing the X Slap or X Cannon.
Don’t stress too much about who you select, as you are able to swap between the three at any time, and as you progress in the story, they combine to create a large mech. Everyone shares the same health bar, so keep that in mind that you won’t be able to change when one pilot’s health gets low. Fortunately, as you defeat enemies, they drop capsules that can help replenish health, shields, and give you extra perks.
The difficulty you selected will determine how many lives you have until you get a game over. Once you hit that point, you will enter your name for the high score board; from there, you can load your save file and continue playing at the beginning of the episode you were on (with the amount of lives you had when you saved) and try to get through that area. The game also lets you create a quick save at any point, and you are able to rewind if you mess up and want to try a spot again.
Like in a traditional anime, there is a commercial break, complete with bumpers and advertising products, like shampoo or action figures of the characters. Before the show is done, there is a battle against a large boss at the end. Once they are defeated, the end credits roll and you see a preview for the next episode. When complete, the game asks if you want to record this broadcast, which is a very cool way of being asked to save your game! I’ve never played a game that followed the format of a show so faithfully.
This is a fast-paced side-scrolling shooter that feels like a game that you would play in the arcade. The game offers three different difficulties to challenge yourself with: Easy, Normal, and Hard. You can also alter the look of the screen by customising CRT Filters, and turning on curvature to make it look like an old television. If you want the game to look how it did when it was released in 1999, you can even turn on the original movie quality.
Geppy-X has a great visual style; I especially love the hand-drawn cutscenes. There are a few spots with 3D animated elements that look a little dated, but that can also be because the 2D sections were so good. Besides having voice acting and a narrator, the thing that was surprising to me was that the game’s music is fully voiced; there is always someone singing, no matter the mood of what is going on in the stage.
I had never heard of this game before, which isn’t too surprising despite the fact I love collecting import games that we never got here, but I sure am glad I get to play this remaster. This game is so unique and strange; I love it. Playing through full episodes of an anime series is so cool! Geppy-X isn’t a super long game, so it might seem a bit expensive. However since this is a remaster, it will end up being a lot cheaper than having to pick up a PS and a copy of the original game, so in hindsight, this is a great deal! This game is teeming with super robot anime nostalgia, and if you love shows like that, you need to play it!
