As one of many successful procedural universes alongside the likes of “One Chicago,” “NCIS,” and “CSI,” NBC’s “Law & Order” franchise has produced multiple spin-offs since the original show premiered in 1990. Spearheaded by the long-running “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” the IP’s many titles actually take place in the same world as several of the best crime dramas ever made.
It’s always a fun surprise when Oli or John Munch (Richard Belzer) leave their habitual sandbox of New York City for somewhere new. With more than a few memorable crossovers already in the books, it will be interesting to see what the future holds when it comes to “Law & Order” characters in other franchises. But for now, these five episodes and crossover events remain the most notable “Law & Order” crossovers
Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D. teamed up to catch criminals
The 2016 two-part crossover between “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago P.D.” was one of four times the two Dick Wolf shows converged. Beginning with “Law & Order: SVU” Season 17, Episode 14, “Nationwide Manhunt,” the plot revolved around two convicted murderers escaping from a New York prison, prompting the Special Victims Unit’s involvement. Chicago detectives Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) and Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) help due to their past investigation into one of the killers, Gregory Yates (Dallas Roberts).
Once it was determined that Yates was in Chicago, Oli traveled to the Windy City in “Chicago P.D.” Season 3, Episode 14, “The Song of Gregory Williams Yates.” Dawson, Lindsay, Benson, and Tutuola worked under intense circumstances, as Yates started terrorizing his own family. Fortunately, Lindsay found Yates and killed him
According to “Law & Order: SVU” showrunner Warren Leight, bringing the two shows’ characters together again showed the evolution of their teamwork. “There’s enough history that they fold easily now into each other,” Leight told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s almost like basketball teams that have played each other a few times. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. They’ll go at it pretty hard, but there’s more mutual respect than there was the first time around.”
Law & Order: Criminal Intent once collaborated with In Plain Sight
The USA Network crime drama “In Plain Sight” ventured into the world of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” on just one brief occasion, but it was a memorable crossover for fans of both series. In “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” Season 7, Episode 12, “Contract,” a blackmail plot and the murder of a tabloid columnist result in detectives Mike Logan (Chris Noth) and Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson) crossing paths with Deputy Marshall Mary Shannon (Mary McCormack) from “In Plain Sight” during the ensuing investigation in New York.
Making the journey from Albuquerque, New Mexico to the Big Apple, Mary helps the Major Case Squad narrow down the list of suspects as they delve into the writer’s links to various public figures. Her involvement stems from the spotlight put on one of her high-profile targets: Mobster Frank Chess (Federico Castelluccio). The episode received positive ratings from viewers, who praised the complexity of the case.
Interestingly, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” Season 7 was the first batch of episodes to air on the USA Network after making the move from NBC. USA capitalized on the opportunity to link its new sister shows despite the “Law & Order” franchise never sharing a universe with “In Plain Sight” before.
Law & Order’s Dr. Emil Skoda appeared in an episode of New York Undercover
Mainstay “Law & Order” psychiatrist Dr. Emil Skoda (J.K. Simmons) showed up in two of the main series’ spin-offs, and even made his debut in “New York Undercover” Season 4, Episode 5. “Mob Street” focuses on Detective Alec Stone’s (Josh Hopkins) undercover scheme to expose a stock-manipulation operation on Wall Street. Dr. Skoda appeared at the end of the episode, officially connecting the two franchises.
Skoda’s brief conversation with Virginia Cooper (Patti D’Arbanville) in “New York Undercover” followed “Law & Order” psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Olivet’s (Carolyn McCormick) small role in Season 3, which showed her meeting Detective Nina Moreno (Luna Lauren Velez). As another one of Dick Wolf’s successful police procedurals, “New York Undercover” was a fitting place for the two “Law & Order” characters to appear outside of their own series. Even though “Law & Order” never took part in a major crossover event with “New York Undercover,” their shared universe through character appearances was essential in demonstrating the franchise’s extensive influence.
Law & Order: SVU crossed over with Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.
The second of two three-part crossovers between “Law & Order: SVU,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Chicago P.D.” was captivating. It all began with a mysterious apartment fire in “Chicago Fire” Season 3, Episode 21, “We Called Her Jellybean,” which brought the Special Victims Unit’s Olivia Benson and Dr. Melinda Warner (Tamara Tunie) to Chicago to investigate an unsolved case connected to an assault and attempted murder. “Chicago P.D.” Season 2, Episode 20, “The Number of Rats” then saw Gregory Yates emerge as the prime suspect, as Detectives Fin Tutuola and Nick Amaro (Danny Pino) arrive in Chicago to assist Benson.
“Law & Order: SVU” Season 16, Episode 20, “Daydream Believer” completed the event with Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) heart-racing confrontation with Yates. Benson and her colleagues’ team-up with the Chicago officers resulted in Yates’ arrest and provided another reminder of just how closely connected the “Law & Order” and “One Chicago” universes are. Like the conclusion to Yates’ plot in the later “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago P.D.” crossover, this three-episode arc earned the overwhelming approval of fans.
Warren Leight revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Yates story stemmed from real-life serial killer Ted Bundy. “It took a long time before people realized it was the same guy and that there was a pattern,” Leight said. “It was an interesting idea so we said maybe he had been active and then he went to another city.”
Law & Order’s first crossover with Homicide: Life on the Street was dark
“Law & Order” crossed over with “Homicide: Life on the Street” three times, and the first two-parter addressed a grim subject. Revolving around a racist terrorist attack in New York, “Law & Order” Season 6, Episode 13, “Charm City” saw a subway gas bombing take the lives of 20 Black Americans. Brian Egan (Kevin Geer) was arrested, but this wasn’t the first racist crime he committed.
As it turns out, Egan had carried out a church attack in Baltimore five years earlier, which took center stage in “Homicide: Life on the Street” Season 4, Episode 12, “For God and Country.” Alongside John Munch, who was a main character of “Homicide: Life on the Street,” detectives Rey Curtis (Benjamin Bratt), and Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) were among the “Law & Order” characters who appeared in the episode, joining the investigation of Baltimore detectives Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher) and Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor).
“Law & Order” and “Homicide: Life on the Street” was Dick Wolf’s first crossover event, and the idea materialized during a conversation with “Homicide: Life on the Street” showrunner Tom Fontana. “‘Homicide’ was one of my favorite shows, he said ‘Law & Order’ was one of his,” Wolf recalled to Deadline. “We were talking, and we thought it would be interesting and fun to do a story that crossed over both shows. He didn’t think anyone had done that and neither did I.”
