10 classic TV shows everyone pretends to remember, but nobody actually watched

Infamy is constantly mistaken for popularity in television nostalgia. A show people actually watched for years feels remembered because of real viewership. A show that shows up in every “worst TV ever” list feels remembered too, for the opposite reason entirely, and those two categories blur together faster than anyone expects once enough decades pass.

Ten shows that belong firmly in the second one.

    My Mother the Car

A lawyer’s dead mother comes back as a 1928 Porter, communicating with her son exclusively through the car radio. It ran for one full season, 30 episodes, and TV Guidelater ranked it the second-worst show ever made.

    Turn-On

ABC canceled this one mid-broadcast during its own premiere. The computer-generated sketch series aired its first episode on February 5, 1969, and by the time it reached West Coast time zones that same night, it hadalready been pulled from the schedule entirely. A second completed episode never aired.

    Supertrain

NBC bet its most expensive production of the era on a series set aboard a nuclear-powered luxury train crossing the country. Viewers saw the<a href="https://shebudgets.com/lifestyle/entertainment/15-tv-shows-that-were-doomed-before-the-first-episode-aired/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>gap between the premise and the actual execution almost immediately, and it was canceled after nine episodes.

    Manimal

A man who can transform into any animal uses the ability to fight crime, undercut by special effects criticsdescribed as borderline grotesque even by 1983 standards. It lasted barely three months on NBC.

    Pink Lady and Jeff

Two Japanese pop singers who barely spoke English got their own American variety show, forced to memorize their lines phonetically with almost no room for spontaneity. NBC pulled the plugafter just five abysmal episodes.

    AfterMASH

A spinoff built around the characters left behind at the VA hospital once MASH ended, it debuted to strong numbers riding the original show’s momentum. Ratingsquickly dived once CBS moved it opposite The A-Team for its second season, and it was canceled shortly after.

    Cop Rock

Steven Bochco, fresh off Hill Street Blues, pitched a police drama where officers periodically broke into full musical numbers mid-investigation. Audiences found the tonal whiplash impossible to sit through, and the show is nowstudied in film schools as a cautionary tale rather than remembered as entertainment.

    Heil Honey I’m Home!

A sitcom imagining Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun as sitcom neighbors waspulled off the air after its single broadcast premiere, with seven of eight planned episodes never shown to the public.

    The Chevy Chase Show

Fox handed Chevy Chase a nightly talk show meant to compete directly with Leno and Letterman during the height of the late-night wars. It wascanceled after five weeks, remembered since as one of the fastest and most expensive talk show failures in network history.

    Homeboys in Outer Space

Two astronauts flew a spaceship called the Space Hoopty through the 23rd century on UPN, and TV Guide laterrated it among the 50 worst television series ever aired. It lasted one season and is remembered today almost entirely through worst-show retrospectives, rather than by anyone who actually tuned in weekly back in 1996.

    The bottom line

Every show on this list is genuinely famous. Almost none of that fame came from anyone actually watching it, which might be the strangest kind of television legacy there is.
