The word “cyberpunk” had been around for four years before William Gibson’s Neuromancer was published in 1984, but that was the novel that crystallized a subgenre. Gibson disdains the term, but it’s useful shorthand. He fused near-future science fiction with crime fiction as a way to talk about the real world, and created something new.
